SUPERMAN VS. BATMAN Star Ben Affleck Talks about Preparing for Batman Casting Backlash

No matter how much Ben Affleck improves his image and gives better performances in better movies, he’s going to have the stigma of past films attached to him as if other actors were never in bad flicks.  His casting as Batman in Zack Snyder‘s Superman vs. Batman was met with mixed reaction to say the least, and some vehement naysayers.  The backlash wasn’t completely unexpected from Affleck’s side, and on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, he said he was somewhat prepared for what the Internet would unleash, although he might be throwing out his computers for a little bit.

Hit the jump to check out the video.  [Affleck talking about being Batman starts at 1:46].  Superman vs. Batman opens July 17, 2015.

He seems like such an affable guy. Great interview. Very excited to see how the movie turns out!

While I can’t say I get it, why they casted him. I’ve never hated it. I like that he seems to be able to laugh off the hate, and if this says anything, it’s that the people who make these decisions are listening to us fans in so,e way. At least enough to warn the actors. They listen but they don’t act on it. I think that’s a good thing. Ill take the oscars over people’s choice all day, because the majority vote typically sucks

  • LEM

I still think he’s an awful choice and Snyder is an effects driven director with little thought given to story so I really don’t think it’ll be a great movie. It will be cool to see Superman and Batman in one movie but I really hoped it would have come together better than this and maybe rushing to play catch up to Marvel/Disney has a lot to do with it.

Yeah, Snyder and Goyer are my main concerns, not Affleck.

Yeah, Snyder and Goyer are my main concerns, not Affleck.

    • Nick

Yeah. I agree, I think Snyder is one of the most over rated and overly indulgent directors out there. He’s flat out lousy in my book. This is clearly a move on marvel because, what marvel has done is condition the publics ADD further in that, now we need 10 superheroes per 2 hours. I like the marvel movies, but it’s clearly why this is happening with justice league. Sad thing is, good, bad better or great… It will have no choice but to live in the shadow of the avengers because marvel did it first and they took their time. Sadly, I won’t know what to expect of this till I see it.. Snyder fooled me with the man of steel trailers, so however good it may look in the months before its released will be of no value

I’m hoping Affleck’ll step up as soon as he sees Snyder standing around at a loss of what to do on set.

      • Unique Jenique

Exactly. Ben Affleck is an amazing director. And those who say he isn’t are obviously just hating. My hope is that Ben isn’t just there to play Batman but to also give Snyder and Goyer some advice.

      • LEM

I think he has script approval as well.

        I hope he does.

I’ve never seen Daredevil and don’t intend to but I thought he was great in The Town and Argo. You can’t please everyone. Seems like a nice guy.

Affleck unfairly takes the brunt of the blame for Daredevil. Nobody seems to ever blame the writer, who came up with that awful dialogue and story, or the director.

This was also back in 2003 when superhero movies were JUST starting. At that point the only superhero movies that were out were Superman and Spider-Man.

I’m sure if they were to do Daredevil today with Affleck it would turn out a lot differently.

      • Nick

Problem is, he sucked in daredevil. Writers are rarely going to get the blame, and they are rarely going to receive the credit,.. That’s life behind the scenes. Plus the writers of daredevil aren’t involved in BATMAN.. Otherwise we would hear about it.

      • ska7triumph

Umm in terms of the new millenium, Singer’s X-MEN was out three years before. So not THAT new.
And BENIFER preceded anything they did, together or separately. Stars don’t just have performances they have personas. That hovered and covered that film, along with GIGLI of course.
The wirter and director are/were the same guy. Both of them are affable dudes and comic nerds; I met them both while working on the NY portion of the shoot. And yes MSJ was blamed along with Affleck.

I like how these basically summed up the blind eye of the greater public and then justified themselves to keep on acting like idiotic assholes cause Ben is a celebrity… very sad.

Oh, so now anyone who doesn’t want to see Ben Affleck in Superman vs Batman is a troll ?
      Wow.
I guess people are no longer entitled to have an opinion.

Yeah I’m assuming this is aimed at the people that were wishing his death and shit lol.. Not people who have concerns, or are even angry about it but rational.

by the way, anyone else keep studying the Runner Runner trailer looking for hints of whether he can pull it off in the cowl or is that just me?

      • Oliver Queen

No not just you, i’m right up there with you man. ;)

    Love this show.
Joking bad was such a delicious tv moment.

I am happy to see that studios read people opinions. even though they do not systematically comply to them. But sometimes they do ( the girl who was cast for Spiderman 2 ).

Nice reaction Ben. Now I am willing to give you a chance. But Not to Snyder. He is such a hack. Z hack Snyder. ( sorry Zack if you read this. ^^).
Zack Snyder is an improved version of Michael Bay. you never care about the characters.

MOS was for me a soulless flick.

    • diddylicious

I agree with you, although I think that the worst blockbuster film of the summer was Iron Man 3, hands down in my opinion one of the worst superhero movie of all time.

      • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

True. seeing Stark jumping from a suit to another in the third act was maybe funny for 2 mn, but it became boring quickly. And the suits explosion was dull.
Not to mention that I disliked the interpretation given to the Mandarin character.

      • HJ

IM3 was indeed the worst of the three. So unimaginative and tired. Even RDJ was awful in it. Still cant believe this came out of Shane Blacks ideas.

  • dewd

Man of Steel sucked so who cares.

Sorry, nothing Affleck does is ever interesting. He is a really shitty actor and I don’t even find him that compelling as a director. The movie prob will be awful anyway, so no loss!

Yeah man I’m rooting for the dude. I’m just skeptical of Snyder’s ability to really to rise to the challenge in making a great film. It’s all about the director folks.
