Costume Designer Michael Wilkinson Says They’re Finalizing the Costumes for BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN

Finalizing costume designs is matter-of-course for any blockbuster.  They go through hundreds of designs for main characters, and then those costumes are subjected to various tweaks and tests.  Something that looks good on the page may not work in three dimensions due to poor visual quality, constrictive movements, or other issues.  So this isn’t really newsworthy except it comes from Batman vs. Superman, but some fans need to know every little detail no matter how minor.

Hit the jump for what Zack Snyder‘s longtime costume designer Michael Wilkinson had to say about the costumes.  The film stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Lawrence Fishburne, and possibly Jason Momoa and Joaquin PhoenixBatman vs. Superman opens July 17, 2015.

Wilkinson tells Cinemovie.tv [via CS]:

“We are now in the stage where we’re refining our designs with the last series of camera tests and doing our final tweaks in preparation for shooting.”

Also, Superman’s new costume from Man of Steel will be getting some tweaks.  As for Wonder Woman and Batman, they’re getting entirely new looks.  That makes sense for Batman, but since this is Wonder Woman’s first big screen iteration, I’m curious how much of a departure her costume will be from the comics.  Can a superhero wear a tiara in Snyder’s serious world?

That’s the thing about recent series that really bothers me, they have to change the suit/costume in order to sell more toys rather than staying to the best design they finally reached. The only exceptions I can think of is the same suit used in TDKR from TDK and the “original” Spiderman trilogy. Look at Thor. With the big flaw of getting rid of the much iconic helmet which was barely used in the 1st movie, all 3 costumes are basically the same but as mentioned above, they’ve made each one “slightly” different, but for the average audience it’s the exact same. For collectors, that’s basically getting 3 of the same figures etc. Sure there are exceptions where they changed it drastically for the better as seen in TASM2, but then again, how many Ironman suits are they gonna end up making by the time The Avengers 3 comes out, like Mark 1000? Anyway, case in point is that regarding Superman’s suit, I don’t see ANY changes necessary. They’ll probably end up changing it for the worse, like adding nipples.

The only change that I would like to see would be the red belt from the New 52. Just something small to break the design up a little.

I wonder what they’re changing to Supes costume.. I thought they absolutely nailed it. As for Batman’s new suit, I hope it looks more like the Noël suit, think that can be done great. I’m not sure about Wonder Woman… Guess we’re actually going to see her in the suit or so…

Maybe they should work on finalizing the script instead of just making it up as they shoot. At least it will look shiny!

    • Murdoch

They just got the dude who wrote Argo to do a rewrite. Does that qualify as “finalizing” enough to you, or should the costume designer also help write the script? And I wonder what the sound designer thinks about the script?

      • tonymatthews

Has he signed on for script writing as well? That’s good news then.

    • RiddleThemThis

So you’re saying they can only get 1 team to work on the movie at a time? The costume guys can’t do anything until the script is 100% complete and then of course they can’t do any filming or anything until the costumes are done.

  • OhGodWhy

New 52 design please! Thank you!

Best of luck figuring out WW costume. It’ll be hard to pull off w out making it look too corny. The other heroes costumes should be easy in comparison.

You had no problem with a skin tight body suit for Cavill that looked painted on but in your wildest imaginings you can picture a Wonder Woman costume? Lulz;)

Ladies and gentlemen…. The Dane Cook of internet trolls. Repetative and unoriginal. Waiting for the piss, corn, and Treyvon Martin comment. But thanks for the comment Broseph. Glad you are my new follower.

Look, i don’t think its funny to point to my obvious addiction to a young, hung, black boy’s piss! I just got over my addiction to a smart, sexy Limey director’s piss! All i want for Christmas is for a Trayvon Martin impersonator to come to my house, gather my family in the living room, drop his pants and start pissing in my open mouth while yelling “ACTION”. I’d really like that, in fact, i’m pretty sure that it’ll be the best birthday ever! I’m willing to pay $300 cash. $350 if he can make it taste like CORN! LULZ! ;-).

Couldn’t he bit notice the above article, AmynAdams says they’re starting filming in Feb yet she didn’t know Wonder Woman was cast or was even in the film. Something tells me the Argo guys being called in to iron out some Seriouus Script problems… Just sayin.

Hoping they go for more of a comic book look for Batman, doesn’t have to mean campy fabric etc just the colour tone. I keep thinking the main reason they don’t go for grey or blue it because it doesn’t translate well on screen. Reading Kevin Smiths comments on the suit though gives me faith.

  • The Flobbit

Batman’s suit had better be based on Lee Bernejo’s brilliant suit in Batman: Noel, or heads will roll. Do at least one thing right.

The costume designer from jonah hex is designing wonder woman?!?!
It’s great it’s not the director of rise of the lycans, he’s designing gotham & the batcave. It’s also good it’s not the designers of the mikebay transformers, but they’re designing the batmobile.

I just hope they get closer to the original design of wonder woman and stay away from the late 80′s early 90′s designs. Especially the poster posted above. How about just steer clear of any designs with the golden turd, or golden penis, or whatever(bird) it is between the b00bs. No golden phallic shape between the b00bs how bout that?! please! thnx.
Then again manofsteel has bracelets so what’dyou expect.
