BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN Rumors: Lex Luthor not the Only Villain; Wonder Woman Has a “Cameo-Plus” Size Role

Filming on Batman vs. Superman will be underway soon, and that means the rumor mill is about to change.  Right now, we’re operating in almost complete darkness.  We know some casting and that’s about it.  But once the cameras start rolling and set photos start leaking, a new picture begins begin to emerge, one with its own special brand of speculation and confusion.  But before we reach that point, there are four new rumors to chew on regarding the highly-anticipated superhero movie.  First, while Lex Luthor hasn’t been confirmed for the upcoming sequel, most fans are betting on seeing the chrome-domed menace challenging the Man of Steel.  However, Batman-on-Film is reporting that while Luthor will be in the movie, there’s another villain in the mix as well.  His sources also say that the second villain will not be one of Batman’s baddies.

Hit the jump for more including the size of Wonder Woman’s role.  The film stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, and Laurence FishburneBatman vs. Superman (unofficial title) opens July 17, 2015.

wonder-woman-amazonWhen Gadot was announced as Wonder Woman, the movie started to look a bit crowded.  There’s nothing wrong with Wonder Woman, but Superman already has to share the screen with Batman, and then you’re trying to squeeze in another hero, and a lot of people don’t even know her origin story.  But according to Batman-on-Film, Batman vs. Superman is “is truly a Superman film.”  Furthermore:

The film’s bad guys are Superman villains and Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel/Clark Kent is the main character. Of course, Batfleck will play a major role in the movie; but I suspect that one of the main reasons for Batman’s inclusion is to establish a new “DCU on Film Batman” and set up future solo Bat-flicks. Same goes for Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman – though I think her role is much smaller than BA’s Batman.

Batman-on-Film describes Wonder Woman’s role as a “cameo-plus” along the lines of Black Widow in Iron Man 2.  That’s not a particularly bad way to handle it, especially when you’ve already got Batman in the picture.  Personally, I’m happy that it will keep the focus on Superman.  We’ve had eight years of Batman, and now it’s time for Superman to have his time to shine.

Finally, Jason Momoa is in talks to join the movie, and Batman-on-Film says unequivocally that he’s not playing Martian Manhunter or Aquaman because neither character is in the movie.

Cool, I Was Hoping They’d Handle It This Way.

I second that. If the rumor here is true, it would show that at least the writers are trying to give the script a proper focus.

    • Nomis1700

      Now IMAX.

This sounds like the perfect way to handle her role. They are just teeing her up for something larger in future pictures. Excited to hear who they will cast as Lex Luthor (really wish it was Mark Strong but doubt it was his role in GL as sinestro might be used again).

Cameo plus sounds good. The only thing is, and forgive me if I’m wrong, I’m not too familiar with the Wonder Woman stories but wasn’t she at one time was a government agent? If this is the case, maybe it’s how she’ll possibly interact with either Batman or Superman, a la Black Widow. My only concern is that we won’t get to see her in costume. I really want to see that on the big screen. Of course, all speculation at this point.

      • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

I hope they don’t go government agent w her as it would be seen too similiar to Black Widow and really alter her character from the origin that most people are familiar with. I doubt we’ll see her in costume, if so it might be a “last shot” kinda set up to let the audience know who she is as a teaser.

    • The Flobbit

I really wish everybody forgot about that travesty that is Green Lantern. Just cast Mark Strong as Lex Luthor; he’s an ACTOR – he plays roles in films. Who’s to say he can’t play Sinestro AND Lex Luthor?

      • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

It would be a tough call for general audience going to distinguish between the two as his Strong’s character in GL still looks very much like him. My thoughts is that WB will keep the GL film in cannon w MOS and they will just introduce John Stewart in favor of Hal Jordan as a way to semi-reboot their franchise (as G.I. Joe: Retaliation did w the Rock) and give it a different feel/tone. They need to hire a director who can handle massive visuals and action/story. I know people want to see Bryan Cranston as Lex Luthor but my thoughts would be to have him play Jim Gordon, as he voiced on Batman: Year One, as I think he could definitely bring something as good and different than what Gary Oldman did in the TDK.

      • The Flobbit

You are right, in fact I have been “campaigning” for Cranston to play Gordon for a long time now. In my perfect world, Richard Armitage (or Jim Caviezel) is Batman, Henry Cavill plays Superman, Mark Strong is Lex Luthor, and Bryan Cranston plays Jim Gordon.

      • The Flobbit

P.S. Sinestro was red, with a widow’s peak and a small mustache. The average movie goer calls Strong “that guy”, and definitely wouldn’t put 2 and 2 together.

    Oh rumors….

  • blueorangeny

We just post real confirmed news instead 3rd party rumors lmao.

  • Mixed Race rich kid NYC

There’s no way this movie comes out good

    • mixedkidmonkey

agreeed bruthaaa, marlon wayans shoulda been batman and instead of zack snider the director shud of been tyler perrry.

      • MixedRaceBaitor

Agreed, except for the whole including a black person in or around these movies. That would be stupid and pointless…this ain’t no charity. Right fellas?

      • Leo Spaceman

You will probably piss off Donald Glover with that statement, I mean why can’t Batman be black? I mean he has only been established as white for like 80 years.

      • ThinkTank

Hell yeah!! We should change him to a black dude! Any other races would be unmentionable! Hollywoods idea of diversity these days=white or black. Heaven forbid we include different races. Right ?

      • Leo Spaceman

I’m sure this is racist and offensive, but to be fair a Chinese Batman would be a bit weird.

      • The_Dude

        Now who’s being racist?

      • Leo Spaceman

Probably me, thats why I prefaced my statement with the line, “I’m sure this is racist and offensive,”

      • Theodore Trout

I would rather see Idris Elba or a young Denzel Washington in the role than Beefleck.

I do see the mega hype just devouring this film. It can never live up to what people have in their heads.

Batman Vs. Superman is a veil… They are hiding Justice League underneath it.

  • dmula

Makes sense,I think Batman’s in this because he sees Superman as a threat for killing Zod,they battle a little and eventually team up a and stand alone movies,JL,etc. happens

Why do I have to agree with the NYU rich kid? Because I completely agree on this one instance. Now that you’re here, NYU, please stop defiling and embarrassing this prestigious University by purporting knowledge and allegedly superior appreciation for what constitutes “art.” Ultimately, while the majority of people may feel a movie is awful, some will enjoy it. Many will spend money on it. Unfortunately, this is what drives movie production in the modern era – not out of desire to make a quality film, but rather a desire to make insane amounts of money (Transformers, Batman v. Superman, etc).

The pure essence of art is that it means different things to different people. What one may dislike another may love, and their reasons for doing so many be ridiculous but it does not change the fact that they enjoy it. So, instead of going out of your way to defile widely loved films (see your Dark Knight Trilogy posts), offer actual, objective criticism other than the fact that you don’t like the film.

    • AFilmGuy

Great comment. Though, I must say I disagree with your take on the essence of art. Personal taste shouldn’t really have much to do with art. I love films that aren’t good films at all, but that doesn’t make them artistic. Art, as Andrey Tarkovsky says, is a means of which we further our attempt to master our world and, in its true essence, ourselves as beings with purpose. It can’t be about what you personally like or dislike. It ceases to be art at that very moment once its universal purpose is divided. But anyways, good job and spot on when it comes to the greed of modern mainstream filmmaking! :)

I hope Diana works for the CIA in this one!

No. she will run a massage business.

  • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

Batman will fight superman on Call of Duty.

  • The Avengers Is a Cash Grab

So this is Iron Man 2 all over again and Hollywood has learned nothing yet again. Basically what we can expect is a bunch of unnecessary subplots.

Here’s a novel idea: make a decent Superman movie first and then get back to me.

    • http://filmsmartblog.wordpress.com/ Josh White

Man of Steel was a great movie to lots of people, I would say it’s pretty decent.

      • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

It wasn’t even a decent flick for me.

      • Strong Enough

thank god no one gives a shit about your opinion

      • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

Right. and the whole world is hanging on your every word. You are the chosen one. The Messie.

Ain’t no hold up! ain’t no hold up!

  • mattinacan

i just don’t see this movie turning out well. if you had told me in 2008 after i watched the Dark Knight, that the next series of movies would be superman and batman, directed by zach snyder, starring Ben Affleck – i might have punched you.

    • Theodore Trout

I think the Nolan films may turn out to have been a lucky fluke in a continuum of horse-exhaust.

  • poppincherry

Next they’ll get Paula Deen as the ASSAULTER.

  • The Flobbit

Damn. I am liking the casting, Ben Affleck aside. Gal Gadot is a capable actress, Jason Momoa is awesome, and Joaquin Phoenix is killer. Now all we need is like…Mark Strong or Clive Owen.

    • E

      Phoenix isn’t confirmed.

      • The Flobbit

It doesn’t matter. He was mentioned in context of the film, and I find that interesting.

  • Kaizokuman

Momoa has got to be Vandal Savage.
