Considering that Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice centers on the conflict between a billionaire in a bat-suit and an alien who’s basically a god, it takes quite a bit of weirdness to make us say, “WTF?” Enter: Michael Shannon’s flipper hands.
Those of you who caught a glimpse of Shannon’s character General Zod – who antagonized Superman in Man of Steel to his own gruesome end – in the Batman v Superman trailer might have noticed his “corpse on ice” look. It’s not yet confirmed, but rather presumed that Zod’s body has ended up in Lex Luthor’s care, as has an exotic type of green space rock. While it’s not a stretch to expect Lex to experiment on the dead Kryptonian in order to find Superman’s weakness, what’s a lot stranger is flipper hands.
Vulture reports that Shannon will not have the use of his
man Kryptonian hands in the film, but rather he will have a pair of cumbersome flippers instead. And this report came about, not from an insider source or expert sleuthing, but rather from Shannon getting trapped in a porta-potty because his digits were inoperable. Here’s how he explained the ordeal:
“I was in my costume, and I couldn’t use my fingers because in the sequel I have flippers instead of hands. So I had these wax flippers on my fingers, and I couldn’t open the door, and I could hear Zack [Snyder, the director] being like, ‘Where’s Shannon? Where the fuck is he?’ and the whole crew was standing around. I was like, knocking on the door with my flippers, ‘Let me out of here!’”
A kindly craft service worker let Shannon out of the john, saving his job and giving us quite the odd story to ponder over. If you’re wondering (like I am) just what has become of Shannon’s Zod, so is he:
“Well, I haven’t seen the trailer either, so I don’t know what I am in the trailer. I could be a toaster, or a Porsche, I don’t know.”
So let’s look at this from a couple of angles. First, Shannon seems like a guy who likes to have fun with people so let’s keep in mind that this could all be some strange prank from his end. Second, however, perhaps Lex’s experiments on Zod led to some sort of incomplete clone that resembles the Kryptonian General but doesn’t get all the details quite right. And I can’t help but think of the Atlantean race dwelling beneath the oceans’ surface when I hear the word “flippers” but for the life of me I have no idea how those two things could be related. Does Lex have an Atlantean? Is he attempting to make some sort of hybrid Krypto-lantean? Is this all just nonsense and red herrings? Let us know in the comments below!
