Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is jam-packed with talented actors, but we’re still trying to figure out who they’re playing. I had forgotten that Scoot McNairy was even in the film (which was my mistake since Scoot McNairy can happen at any time), but now a rumor has resurfaced regarding his role in the upcoming superhero movie.

/Film reports that last year, McNairy was spotted on set wearing bright green socks, which indicates CG work. Then an individual claiming to have worked as an extra on the film said that McNairy was playing Jimmy Olsen:

Scoot is playing Jimmy Olsen, but with a bit of a twist. Jimmy was injured during the battle of Zod vs Superman. His legs where pinned under falling building rubble and that caused him to lose the legs. He now walks with the use of two prosthetic legs. He doesn’t blame Superman for it [his loss of legs]. He feels grateful that Superman saved the world.

Since then, things have been quiet, but Heroic Hollywood now reports that the original Jimmy Olsen rumor is true, and it’s a plausible rumor, not just because they want to squeeze in characters that people know, but because it fits with Batman v Superman being a reaction to audience’s reaction to Man of Steel’s climactic, city-destroying battle. I’m sure director Zack Snyder and co. will claim that destroying Metropolis was always intended to lead to the consequences of Batman v Superman, but I think if A) Man of Steel had done better at the box office; and B) people hadn’t batted an eye at the recklessness of the Superman/Zod fight, we would be looking at a very different follow up.

If Olsen lost his legs in the battle, but he’s still grateful for Superman saving the world, then that’s supposed to put us on Superman’s side. Olsen is the everyman counterpoint to Batman’s elite, unilateral mission to make sure one being can’t wipe out an entire city.

But this is still all rumor and speculation for the time being, and it will be interesting to see where McNairy fits into this gigantic movie.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens March 25, 2016, and also stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, and Diane Lane.
