Warner Premiere, the Warner Bros. division that handles the direct-to-DVD animated superhero films, has released a trailer for Batman: Year One.  The film is based on Frank Miller’s acclaimed 1987 comic miniseries of the same name.  As if the title didn’t give it away, the film focuses on the Caped Crusader’s first year as a costumed vigilante.  The trailer looks interesting and Warner Premiere did an alright job with last year’s Batman: Under the Red Hood.  This time around, Batman will be voiced Ben McKenzie (Southland) with Bryan Cranston as Detective Gordon, Eliza Dushku as Catwoman, and Katee Sackhoff as Gordon’s love interest, Detective Sarah Essen.  While McKenzie sounds fine, I always hear Kevin Conroy (from Batman: The Animated Series) as the proper voice of the Dark Knight.  Thankfully, he’s reprising the role for Batman: Arkham City.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Batman: Year One will premiere at Comic-Con and hit stores sometime this fall.

Here’s the official synopsis for Batman: Year One:

A young Bruce Wayne has spent his adolescence and early adulthood, traveling the world so he could hone his body and mind into the perfect fighting and investigative machine. But now as he returns to Gotham City, he must find a way to focus his passion and bring justice to his city. Retracing Batman’s first attempts to fight injustice as a costumed vigilante, we watch as he chooses a guise of a giant bat, creates an early bond with a young Lieutenant James Gordon, inadvertently plays a role in the birth of Catwoman, and helps to bring down a corrupt political system that infests Gotham.

Kevin Conroy is most definitely THE VOICE of Batman.

    • Harley

So true I love Kevin’s voice! But I’m willing to give Ben a shot.

“What did you think of that trailer Mr. Horse?”
    “Hmm… Hmmm… No Sir, i didn’t like it. ”

Really deserves the hard “R” treatment if you want to do the graphic novel justice.

Another Batman? Can they do a direct to video release that isn’t Batman or Superman!?! I think they are great and I enjoy queuing the up on Netflix, but c’mon! There are a ton of other heroes in the DC vault. Personally, I’d love to see a new feature length JLU movie. If not that, how about a Flash vs. Grodd release?

I’m still waiting for The New Teen Titans Judas Contract dvd. Kind of glad they held off because the quality of these WB dvds have left a lot to be desired. This one, Batman Year One looks very good though. Looking forward to it. So now that we know they can do quality work, bring on Teen Titans: The Judas Contract!

How about Aquaman??…..looks great, btw there is another shocase episode included in this release i though they were done with those, thats why they released the Superman Shazam disc right???…… ahh marketing sucks big time!

  • Conroy’s Nuts

Am I the only one who is sick of hearing Kevin Conroy’s name dropped every time there is a new animated Batman being released?! Yes, he WAS a good voice for Batman…IN THE FUCKING 90′s! Its a perfect example of people’s ignorance to the potential of CHANGE. And don’t even get me started on Mark Hammill’s IRRITATING Joker.

You sir are a freaking moron.

Bryan Cranston as Gordon is pure win. I remember watching him in season 1 of Breaking Bad and thinking of how much he reminded me of a Year One Gordon.

Nice. Looks faithful enough to the source material. I want Killing Joke next please.. and do make it more edgier and I mean more R-rated in terms of not shying away from a little violence ala-Watchmen/Sin City here and there.

Kevin Michael Richardson’s Joker in The Batman was very good, plus that series was way better than the 90s show (which, if you watch now, had many moments where the script writers ran out of words!) I agree with comments here that you shouldn’t name drop well established voices (as talented as they are) and if you’re going to moan and piss about this, don’t fucking watch it, then!

Batman: TAS is far superior to any other cartoon version of the character (specifically seasons 1-3). I know this is really a matter of opinion, but my opinion is backed up by a vast majority of critics and Batman fans alike. Sorry, bro.

Looks great. Awesome book and looking forward to Dark Knight returns animated too.
The one I hope gets made though is HUSH. Thats my favorite style of comics so far. (Be nice in MOCAP actually.)

No more lame stories though please, that last Superman one sucked with its sill villains and endless punching that doesnt seem to do any damage to anyone but buildings.
