Entertainment Tonight got a behind-the-scenes look at Peter Berg’s upcoming board game adaptation, Battleship.  In this ET segment, you’ll get Rihanna being completely unconvincing as a navy officer (the character’s tattoos “dirty her up a bit”, and then I burst out laughing when she said “and of course, no make-up.”) plus a breakdown of how the main characters are related to one another.  Helpfully glossed over: details of the whole alien invasion thing that pits battleships against spaceships.  There’s probably nothing in this behind-the-scenes preview that’s going to change the opinion you had after seeing the trailer.  You’ll just get a better idea of how expensive the movie is.

Hit the jump to check out the clip.  The film also stars Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker, and Liam Neeson.  Battleship opens May 18, 2012.

Here’s the official synopsis for Battleship:

Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epic action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Based on Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancée; Alexander Skarsgard as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane.

  1. The fact that the Hollywood machine behind this gave this Rihanna a similar rank to THE One and Only Master Chief just pissed me off in a way that would make The Hulk mighty proud, these are some disgusting people.

      • I agree that Halo is one of the most overrated games around, in the history of gaming.

I’d much rather play any number of Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, Gears of War, Metal Gear or God of War games than ever play Halo again.

Many of the enemies in Halo are just too childish, especially those duck-looking aliens that waddle around.

  2. Matt as long as you keep on using that rihanna pic for everything Battleship article related including reviews and behind the scenes it don’t matter to me lol

  3. This looks like a real piece of shit.It will probably do good financially and get a sequel that blows just as much.Or maybe it will bomb and save us all until the Micheal Bay reboot

  4. Well, who the hell knows? Perhaps Rihanna will shock the world by pulling out her brilliance and skilful acting in this film that none of us know she has.

  5. A friend has sent me a photo of a lovingly restored steam launch that was apparently the admiral of the fleets launch in ww one its called count dracular and was “supposed to have been launched off the sinking battleship that carried her before it went down” This was a german battleship by all acounts, the boat is in the south of England .

  6. Fluff piece fluffs piece.

No idea how Rihanna will do, but this shows nothing either way. She fires two guns and fires them well enough. That is all.

I’m still holding out some hope for this based on early interviews with Peter Berg. The tactical part could be fun as there hasn’t been a modern naval movie in a long time.

  7. Wait guys…
Who cares WHO is in this? Its a popcorn movie about Battleships with big guns. Fighting Big Aliens in the sea. 10/10 for gratuitus Mini-gun firing. 10/10 for big explosions!
10/10 for NOT having ridiculous jive talking transforming robots and a Witwiki.

This film looks 10 times better than all 3 Transformers flicks already. I hope I’m right but as long as the acting is decent and theres NO corny dialogue, the action could be spectacular.

  8. Rihanna’s comments about needing to “dirty up” her character is a bit sexist. Just because a female is in the Navy doesn’t mean she has to have tattoos and go make-up commando to fit in. Be a woman in a man’s world, Rihanna, not a man with a vagina.

    • This movie is not about portraying things accurately but instead to the maximum cliche. Taylor Kitsch is gonna play THE most talented person Liam Neeson has ever seen but obviously his attitude is wasting it all away. Then he has to prove himself in the movie so Neeson can approve of him being with his daughher.

      • In all honesty, you’re right. It was foolish of me to think this movie would be in the same zipcode as realistic. I did, after all, watch the trailer. After which I promptly punished myself with regular applications of ice and salt. On my eyes.

  9. In other news, that interviewer Mark Stennis or whatever could play Captain Jack (John Barrowman)’s brother on Torchwood, they look identical.

  10. Dear God, how can anybody watch crap like Entertainment Tonight? Kudos to Kitsch and Skarsgaard for not laughing in that idiot “reporter’s” face.

  11. This looks beyond horrible. Anybody else notice that Rhianna seems to have trouble speaking clearly in an interview? When it comes to the acting part, isn’t that going to complicate things? Also, I don’t remember aliens in Battleship, I thought it was a game of two naval fleets fighting each other.
