Universal Pictures has launched the official website for Peter Berg’s Battleship. I was surprised the film, which was rumored to have a $200 million budget, didn’t have some kind of presence at Comic-Con. The biggest star in the movie is Liam Neeson (it’s a supporting role) and the cast includes Rihanna and Brooklyn Decker. The movie’s lead is Taylor Kitsch who, while charming and charismatic, has never opened a movie this big (he’s also tasked with carrying Disney’s John Carter, which opens in March). But the biggest hurdle is that it’s based on the board game Battleship and people tend to see that and think “They’ll make a movie out of anything!” Oh, and the movie involves an armada fighting aliens. A panel wouldn’t have been the worst idea.
Now the official website has launched and it features a giant countdown clock that is counting down to 8:00 AM (PST) this Wednesday. What happens when it hits zero? My guess is a teaser trailer, but we’ll have to wait and see. Battleship opens May 18, 2012.
