A trailer for the indie drama Beautiful Boy has gone online.  The story takes the unique perspective of focusing on the parents (played by Michael Sheen and Maria Bello) of a young man who went on a shooting spree on his college campus and then killed himself.  Usually, the approach to a senseless tragedy such as that is to blame the parents, and then the tragedy somehow makes sense: better parents means better kid means no shooting spree and we can go back to pretending that the world is not a random series of uncontrollable events.  I have hope that Shawn Ku's film, which played at last year's Toronto Film Festival, will handle its subject matter with maturity and insight.  Having Sheen and Bello as the leads is already a great sign.

Here's the official synopsis for Beautiful Boy:

Bill and Kate hopelessly try to find some hint of an explanation after finding out that their only son committed a mass shooting at his university before taking his own life. They struggle numbly through the funeral, the media onslaught, and the awkward pity from relatives and friends. Their already strained marriage is tested as they realize all they have left with each other is their shared grief and confusion -- and the unfortunate legacy of their son. This life-altering event forces Bill and Kate to face their feelings of guilt, rage, blame, self-discovery -- and ultimately hope -- so that they can finally see each other and their chance for happiness again with clear eyes.
