Ben Affleck Will Also Star in His Next Directorial Feature, ARGO

     June 27, 2011

Director Ben Affleck first started considering Argo as his next project in February.  In the months since, Affleck cast Alan Arkin and John Goodman in two supporting roles.  Until tonight, Affleck had yet to announce the man to play Tony Mendez, “the CIA exfiltration expert who created a fake Hollywood production to get six Americans who were hiding out at the Canadian ambassador’s out of Iran.”  According to Variety, Affleck will assume the lead role himself.  Affleck, Arkin, and Goodman make a formidable trio at the top of the playbill.

George Clooney and Grant Heslov are on board as producers under their Smokehouse banner.  Chris Terrio (Heights) wrote the script based on a Wired magazine article titled “How the CIA Used a Fake Sci-Fi Flick to Rescue Americans from Tehran.”  Read more about the truly movie-worthy subject matter after the break.

This outline is pulled from our initial report:

“The story centers on how, during the occupation of the American embassy by Iranians in 1979, a rescue effort was mounted by the CIA and the Canadian government to extract six U.S. diplomats.

The CIA used a disguise expert and concocted a scenario that involved the six being a Hollywood crew scouting a movie titled Argo. Under those disguises, they were able to flee the country.”

Read the full Wired article, written by Joshuah Bearman and published in April 2007, here.

Terrio’s script landed on the 2010 Black List of Hollywood’s best unproduced screenplays.  Alan Arkin and John Goodman are in final negotiations to play producer Lester Siegel and Oscar-winning makeup artist John Chambers, respectively.

Given the talent on both sides of the camera, I’m guessing Warner Bros. will schedule Argo for release as an Oscar hopeful in late 2012.

With Clooney producing and Affleck directing, there is only one guarantee: Armond White will hate this.

  • Tarek

    I hate Ben Affleck!

  • Jason

So instead of offering a big opportunity to an Hispanic and/Latino actor, Affleck casts himself.

    What an asshole.

    • Michael

I agree, Jason. He does have the power, sway and influence in Hollywood to push at least a few buttons. Even though he can’t outright get Hollywood to do his bidding, with the money he’s made them, he can ask for “favors.” It’s bad enough that Hollywood whitewashes fictional characters, but they’ve also been doing that with real-life ones. And this is just the latest example.

  • Cali Kid

Good, The Town was fantastic. He needs to act and direct a lot more movies. He seems so relaxed in the Town. I think that’s what made it his best performance yet.

    • Jason

      No, not good.

Why does he not offer the role to an Hispanic American and/or Latino American actor?

Nonwhite actors are not given anywhere near the amount of offers for roles particularly lead roles in studio films.

So he continues the disgusting practice by hiring himself as Antonio Mendez instead of the many Hispanic American and/or Latino American actors that get marginalized by the system on a daily basis.

      • Cali Kid

Because it’s his project and he can do what he wants. When it’s your project you can put whatever type of people you want in them.

      • Jason

If that’s your defense then you have no argument.

Clearly the reason why this is being done is because he can do it. Just like the producers of “21″ white washed that movie simply because they “can”.

However, “can” is no argument as this is wrong and Affleck is an asshole for doing it. Nonwhites are constantly being ignored for major and lead roles in Hollywood and this is yet another example of such an incident.

      • Michael

Cali Kid, your line of thinking isn’t based in reality. No person of color can greenlight any movie in Hollywood, and casting is still very much racist in favor of white actors, hence why Ben Affleck is playing a real-life Latino person, hence why characters of Asian descent (both based in real life, and fictional) are being played by white actors.

If you think that even Ben Affleck can simply do whatever he wants with a Hollywood movie “because it’s his project,” you have a lot to learn about Hollywood and corporations in America.

  • Jane

Ben must think since he banged JLo once upon a time that makes him part latino. Another vanity project from an awful actor and an average director.

Completely agree with Jason, Michael, and Jane. Affleck is a fucking racist dickhead and so is anyone who supports this shit like Cali Kid.
