A few months ago, we reported that Stephen Frears (The Queen) was set to direct a film based on disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong. The film stars Ben Foster as Armstrong, and John Hodge‘s script will reportedly focus on “Armstrong’s career from his cancer ordeal to the scandal that brought him down.” Empire has released the first image from the movie as well as provided some new casting and story details. Chris O’Dowd is set to co-star as Irish sports journalist David Walsh, who was one of the first people to suspect that Armstrong may be doping. O’Dowd will be joined by Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad) and Guillaume Canet (Tell No One), whose roles are currently unknown.
Hit the jump to check out the image. Filming is expected to continue until the early spring. In a related story, Alex Gibney‘s documentary about Armstrong’s rise and fall, The Armstrong Lie, will open in limited release on November 8th. The success of that movie could provide a barometer about the public’s continued interest in Armstrong.
