Last weekend at Comic-Con, shortly after watching Marvel’s kick-ass panel in Hall H, I was able to speak with Benedict Cumberbatch about playing Doctor Strange in Scott Derrickson’s upcoming film. We talked about how he didn't know much about the character before joining the project and why he thinks the movie will surprise people, but for me, the best moment was being able to bring up an old memory from a few years ago.

A bit before J.J. Abrams Star Trek Into Darkness hit theaters, Paramount held a press event at Bad Robot’s headquarters in Los Angeles, where I was able – along with a few other reporters – to talk to Benedict Cumberbatch. While we made a lot of small talk about Star Trek and how things were going with his career, one of the things we brought up was how he’d make a great Doctor Strange. I remember him telling us he wasn’t that familiar with the character, but he listened intently while a few of us told him the backstory and how it’d be a cool role.

Since he ultimately landed the job as Doctor Strange, I’ve always thought back to that night when a few of us brought up the role, and wanted to bring it up with him. And until last weekend at Comic-Con, I haven’t had a chance. Since I don’t want to spoil exactly what happened….I’ll just say he has a good memory. Check out the conversation above, and below you’ll find the official Doctor Strange synopsis along with a few recent links.

Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.
