The Black List script The Imitation Game has had a rather dynamic development thus far, but it looks as though the film is now finally close to coming to fruition.  Warner Bros. initially bought Graham Moore’s screenplay for a hefty sum with Leonardo DiCaprio eyeing the lead role of Alan Turing, a brilliant cryptanalyst whose expertise cracked Germany’s “Enigma code” and helped turn the tide of World War II for the Allies and whose homosexuality made him a target of prosecution (yes, he was taken to court for being gay).  DiCaprio eventually left the project and Warner Bros. followed suit, and recently Morten Tyldum (Headhunters) came onboard to direct.  Now a new lead has been found in the unendingly popular Benedict Cumberbatch.  Hit the jump for more.

Per Deadline, Cumberbatch is in deep conversations to play the English mathematician for Tyldum.  It’s a devastating story of an extraordinary man who was put through hell just for being who he was, and the immensely talented Cumberbatch sounds like a fine fit for the role.  Black Bear is fully financing the pic and a distributor is likely to sign on soon with Cumberbatch now involved.

The actor is currently filming director Bill Condon’s WikiLeaks movie The Fifth Estate, in which he plays Julian Assange.  He also is due back to start shooting the third season of the British series Sherlock in a few months, so one imagines production on The Imitation Game might get under way later this year.

Very happy with this news. DiCaprio was never a good fit.

Not even the most ardent conservative doubts Turing’s heroic efforts in winning the war effort, but the fact remains (whether your oh-so-liberal sensibilities like it or not) that homosexuality was against the law in just about EVERY country the world over at the time… and Turing was prosecuted according to the law, it’s as simple as that, whatever your opinion in hindsight of said prosecution.
