Benjamin Walker (Flags of Our Fathers) was among the lesser known names of the shortlist — Walker, Adrien Brody, Timothy Olyphant, Josh Lucas, James D’Arcy, Oliver Jackson-Cohen — that screen tested for the lead role in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.  But 20th Century Fox appears eager to get into the Benjamin Walker business.  Walker was the first young actor cast as a student in the X-Men: First Class before he was dropped out to reprise his starring role in the Broadway musical Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.  In retrospect, that iconoclastically presidential role was the perfect preparation to anchor Fox’s summer tentpole: Variety reports Walker has closed a deal to star in Abraham Lincoln.

Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) will direct and co-produce with Tim Burton and Jim Lemley (9).  Seth Grahame-Smith wrote both the book and the adapted screenplay.  Hit the jump for an official synopsis for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, scheduled for release June 22, 2012.

Indiana, 1818. Moonlight falls through the dense woods that surround a one-room cabin, where a nine-year-old Abraham Lincoln kneels at his suffering mother’s bedside. She’s been stricken with something the old-timers call “Milk Sickness.”

“My baby boy…” she whispers before dying.

Only later will the grieving Abe learn that his mother’s fatal affliction was actually the work of a vampire.

When the truth becomes known to young Lincoln, he writes in his journal, “henceforth my life shall be one of rigorous study and devotion. I shall become a master of mind and body. And this mastery shall have but one purpose…” Gifted with his legendary height, strength, and skill with an ax, Abe sets out on a path of vengeance that will lead him all the way to the White House.

While Abraham Lincoln is widely lauded for saving a Union and freeing millions of slaves, his valiant fight against the forces of the undead has remained in the shadows for hundreds of years. That is, until Seth Grahame-Smith stumbled upon The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln, and became the first living person to lay eyes on it in more than 140 years.

Using the journal as his guide and writing in the grand biographical style of Doris Kearns Goodwin and David McCullough, Seth has reconstructed the true life story of our greatest president for the first time-all while revealing the hidden history behind the Civil War and uncovering the role vampires played in the birth, growth, and near-death of our nation. Here’s a clip of Walker from a preview of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, which reimagines America’s seventh president as an Emo rock star.

I saw Walker in Bloody Bloody and he was WAY better than that clip would lead anyone to believe. The guy made Andrew Jackson pretty badass. Lincoln should be easy after that.

Just really loved the book immensely, I just hope he doesnt screw it up. I really pictured many other people, but not him. Jame Franco honestly I think could do it. That man can do anything well it would seem.

Daywatch and Nightwatch were cool but… Maybe he should of stayed in Russia? Rasputin Vampire Hunter makes more sence. Abe Lincoln? That’s retarded, as this books just sounds like a rip off of Blade, and as ending slavery and holding the nation together were his passions its kinda f@&$ing offensive. Their already enough people who are stupid or stupid about history in this country.

I can decide if I hated this book or Pride and Prejudice and Zombies more. Close call. Both immense wastes of nifty concepts.
