BEVERLY HILLS COP 4 To Take Place During “Coldest Winter On Record”

     July 4, 2014

It’s been over 20 years since we last caught up with Eddie Murphy‘s Axel Foley but all of that will change once Beverly Hills Cop 4 starts filming later this year in Detroit. In a small, but interesting, piece of news that slipped by us a few days ago, it turns out that the state of Michigan has approved $13.5 million in film incentives for the shoot (it seems as though the producers are looking to spend an estimated $56.6 million in the state). What’s interesting here is that, for me, the lead in this story (in the form of a slightly expanded synopsis) was somewhat buried. We knew before that the film would see Axel Foley return to his old stomping grounds. But the Michigan Film office states that Foley “leaves his position in Beverly Hills ”during the coldest winter on record to navigate the new rules and old enemies in one of America’s most tenacious cities.”

“Coldest winter on record.” Weird detail to include. What does that mean for this Brett Ratner (Tower Heist) directed installment?

I’m not entirely sure. I haven’t read the script by Josh Appelbaum and Andre Neme (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol), and I’m not entirely clear on where this brutal winter occurs. It doesn’t make much sense to depict such a thing happening in Beverly Hills (unless there’s some super weird global warming statement at play), so I’m going with Detroit (which is actually known to have winters).

I guess the reason I even find this slightly intriguing is that I’m hoping it signals a shift in tone away from the disappointment that was Beverly Hills Cop 3. Maybe there’s something gritty going on in the vein of the first installment? Again, Brett Ratner is directing so I wouldn’t count on it. But one can hope. Check out more on this at Rolling Stone.

I’m hoping it’s a notch up from the last one.

“What does that mean for this Brett Ratner (Tower Heist) directed installment?” It means the amount of people who care about this project is still zero.

    • LEM

      Below zero…get it.

  • Reeve

First off, Brett Ratner? And secondly, wasn’t the formula of the franchise he goes to Beverly Hills? Him going to Detroit sounds like one of those lame “protagonist returns home from big city and helps stop trouble and stays there” gimmick.

  • Yo Joe

It’s been almost 30 years since BHC 2. Since, that steaming pile of donkey doo called part 3 does not exist in this dojo.

Martin Brest and Tony Scott are two of the greatest directors of all time. I hope that Ratner steps up to the plate.

    • Boone

Tony Scott was one of the greatest for sure and BHC2 is one of my favorite.

  • To Be Continued

I have a soft spot for the third movie. Sue me.

Too late for this franchise with a fourth sequel. They was better off rebooting the franchise with Kevin Hart as Foley. Murphy should take some time off and hit the comedy clubs and then make a stand up comedy concert movie. That’s what the fans of his really want to see.

    • Atlasshruggedmyass

I actually think “Romany Malco” would have been much better for a reboot
      Than “Kevin Hart”.

eddie murphy is one of the few actors who never really tried to redeem his career with an independent movie or two, or an unlikely supporting role. its like his agent always swings for the fences.

    • Cedhollywood

Independent movies pay scale. As long as he gets work he is interested in that pays his salary and demands, there is no reason for him personally to be in a independent movie. Point is I don’t think Murphy is interested in a great “film legacy” on the level of a Pachino,Poitier,De Niro or Washington.

I live in Michigan, and we had one of the snowiest and coldest winters on record this year. I wonder if that’s where they got the idea from?

  • appolox

If you’re gonna make a sequel, do it 2 to 6 years after the previous installment. But after 21 years. No one cares, wants, our asked for another. You’ve run your course Axel Foley. It’s time for retirement.

Dang I misread that. I thought they meant the coldest winter on record in LA, which would be a good joke.

Meh. I’m sure it won’t be any better or worse than the 3rd.
