HBO confirmed today that their long-looming multi-platform deal with sports historian and personality Bill Simmons, recently summarily dismissed from ESPN following several outspoken criticisms of the NFL, NCAA, and other sports leagues and associations, is a go. As Michael Lombardo, President of HBO Programming, announced today, Simmons will have a weekly talk show centered not only on sports but on all parts of the cultural landscape; the show will debut in 2016. On top of this, Simmons will serve as a consultant and producer on a myriad of projects for HBO Sports, including documentaries and other programs. The New York Times bestselling author and founding Grantland editor is also set to house his podcast underneath the HBO banner, and help produce video podcasts and other online content for the pay channel.

Here's what Simmons had to say of the deal:

“It’s no secret that HBO is the single best place for creative people in the entire media landscape...From the moment I started talking to Michael and Richard [Plepler, HBO chairman and CEO], it was hard to imagine being anywhere else.”

The very thought of such a program quickens the pulse, and Simmons would seemingly be the only suitable man to host such a show. Anticipation is clearly up for his 2016 bow, and if his attention to detail and attraction to unique, socially relevant stories of sports history or experience remains, he could give HBO Sports a much-needed shot in the arm. Even for the most powerful and creative television channel on the planet, this would count as a tremendous get.
