The first images from the set of director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s black comedy Birdman have surfaced, and they’re quite glorious.  The film stars Michael Keaton as an actor who once played an iconic superhero, and now faces troubles with his ego and family as he prepares to mount a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim past glory.  The majority of the film takes place inside a New York City theater, but these photos show Keaton filming a scene on the NYC streets in which he is followed around by his former superhero character.  The superhero is likely a figment of Keaton’s imagination in this particular scene, but the costume for the titular Birdman looks fantastic. I absolutely cannot wait to see Keaton shine in Iñárritu’s first foray into the comedy genre.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  The film also stars Edward NortonNaomi WattsEmma StoneZach GalifianakisAmy Ryan, and Andrea Riseborough.

Here’s the official synopsis for Birdman:

BIRDMAN or The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance is a black comedy that tells the story of an actor (Keaton) – famous for portraying an iconic superhero – as he struggles to mount a Broadway play.  In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself.
