A new trailer for director Scott Cooper's Black Mass has gone online .The film stars Johnny Depp as notorious crime boss Whitey Bulger, who simultaneously worked as an FBI informant and committed horrible crimes throughout the Boston area for decades. While the previous trailers highlighted Depp giving what looks to be a terrific performance, this new one zeroes in on the plot and turns Bulger into more of a mythic figure, a devil terrorizing Boston at the acquiescence of FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton). It’s a terrific trailer, and I can’t wait to see this film when it plays at TIFF.

Check out the trailer below.  The film will premiere at the Venice Film Festival before opening on September 18th.  Black Mass also stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Corey StollJesse Plemons and Dakota Johnson, the Warner Bros. film opens September 18th.

Here’s the synopsis for Black Mass:

In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob.  The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.
