Rob Liefeld has made a deal with Adi Shankar‘s 1984 Private Defense Contractors to turn his comic Bloodstrike into a feature. The comic centers on “a Bloodstrike unit consisting of a team of super-soldiers who have secretly been imbued with vampire blood—making them an elite strike force feared by all enemies.” According to Variety, Shankar and Liefeld will produce along with Liefeld’s manager Brooklyn Weaver (The Number 23). They are conceiving of Bloodstrike as a possible franchise.
Liefeld helped found Image Comics in 1992 and launched Bloodstrike in 1993, selling over 30 million copies in the years since. Hit the jump for background information on the series.
Bloodstrike was a top-secret, super-powered assassination squad deployed covertly by the United States government. All of the members had already died before becoming members of the team; they were brought back to life by the government’s Project: Born Again…
The main character and team leader was Cabbot Stone (brother of ex-Youngblood member and Brigade member Battlestone). Other members were the four-armed Fourplay, the ex-villain Deadlock, the power-armored Shogun, and the enigmatic Tag, who could force people to “freeze in place” by touching them. The computer in charge of teleporting the team was named Roam. It had to re-charge its cells after each transport. In the first issue, the team is sent to a G.A.T.E. (Genetic and Technological Engineering) facility and battle and kill Commander Corben, who hired them to prove his facility is worthy. [Wikipedia]
To give you a sense of their mission statement, 1984 Private Defense Contractors is also the studio that is spearheading the all-female version of The Expendables.

Never heard about the comic before, seems interesting. The main guy kind of looks like Marvels Deadpool.
thats because Liefeld ripped off Deadpool, essentially the same guy. Liefeld does this all the damn time.
I would hate to give Liefeld any credit, because I’m really really not a fan of the guy, but he actually created Deadpool, not rip him off. But that’s not really a defense of Liefeld. If anything it just shows his lack of creativity. He draws the same character over and over and gives them different names.

You can essentially forget everything about the Bloodstrike comic, the only part this movie will likely have in common with it is “a unit consisting of a team of super-soldiers who have secretly been imbued with vampire blood—making them an elite strike force feared by all enemies.” Maybe a couple of names will remain. I can’t imagine anyone trying to adapt the rest of the series’ elements. It looks like they just wanted the name and very basic concept.
