Last Week, Derek Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine was hit was an unexpected NC-17 rating for a scene that was emotionally jarring but not graphically offensive. Since most theaters won’t run NC-17 films, The Weinstein Company was left with the choice to either appeal the rating or have Cianfrance make cuts and re-submit the movie. The Weinstein Company have now issued a statement saying they will appeal the rating. Hit the jump to read the official statement from Harvey Weinstein regarding the matter. Blue Valentine stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams and is set to open on December 31st.
Here’s Harvey Weinstein’s statement regarding his company’s decision to appeal the NC-17 rating:
We want to express our deepest gratitude to our colleagues in the industry and in the media for their recent outpouring of support for Derek Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine after the film surprisingly received an NC-17 rating from the MPAA. We are taking every possible step to contest the MPAA’s decision. We respect the work of the MPAA and we hope, after having a chance to sit down with them, they will see that our appeal is reasonable, and the film, which is an honest and personal portrait of a relationship, would be significantly harmed by such a rating.
And for those just tuning in, here’s the official synopsis for Blue Valentine:
The story of love found and love lost told in past and present moments in time. Flooded with romantic memories of their courtship, Dean and Cindy use one night to try and save their failing marriage.

Instead of movies like Blue Valentine, the MPAA should rate series like Hannah Montana which really fu** up the minds of teenagers…
The only reason I think this film should get that NC-17 rating dropped is because if it doesn’t, I’m going to have a helluva time finding a theater that’ll play it…
Other than that, leave the NC-17 rating! Just a safegaurd against people bringing their kids to talk during the movie…
It doesn’t work that way; the studio won’t release a movie rated NC-17 because it won’t be played in enough theaters to make ANY money.
The MPAA sucks. It’s lined with complete morons. See This Film is Not Yet Rated for examples of their idiocy.
