I first played Borderlands 2 way back in 2013 and became quickly addicted. I ended up getting it for Xbox360, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One as the shoot-and-loot game took me across a colorful dystopian wasteland. In the six years since, the only follow-up has been the mild Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (which wasn’t developed by Gearbox, who made the first two Borderlands games) and the acclaimed Telltale Games Tales from the Borderlands. Yesterday, we got the “Mask of Mayhem” teaser trailer, but we now finally have the full trailer for Borderlands 3.

Details on the game are still scarce (more info is promised on the Borderlands website on April 3rd), but there are plenty of neat details in this trailer. It shows that pretty much everyone who survived Borderlands 2 is returning for Borderlands 3, there will be new big bads (a man and a woman, apparently), and loads and loads of guns. The distinctive art style remains, and there’s still the emphasis on the wild, insane world to explore.

My big question is what will be the big change, if any? In a AAA marketplace that’s emphasizing MMO-like games-as-service offerings, what does Borderlands 3 look like? Borderlands 2 was firmly a single or co-op game where you could play it solo if you liked, but if you teamed up with friends, you get a greater challenge and greater loot. Does Borderlands 3 follow in that mold, or does it try to do something different? Does it try to bring in elements of Battle Royale a la PUBG and Fortnite? Does it emphasize progression through co-op play like Destiny? As someone who prefers to play games solo, I’m hoping that the single-player campaign remains the heart of Borderlands.

Check out the Borderlands 3 trailer below. No release date has been announced yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that info and more arrives on April 3rd.
