The first behind-the-scenes image from Paul Greengrass's new Bourne film confirms one thing: Matt Damon is back and he's ready to fight. Currently untitled, the plot details of Bourne 5 are about as confidential as the secrets within the on-screen spy world itself. What we do know is that Damon will return as Jason Bourne, and he'll square off against an antagonist played by Vincent Cassel in a movie that explores espionage and politics in a "post-Snowden world."

As this new image reveals, courtesy of producer Frank Marshall, Bourne is either gearing up or has just survived a rough-and-tumble fight, one that requires Damon to wrap his hands Muay Thai style. As Damon previously revealed, the film will start in Greece (modeling the beginning of democracy) and ends in Las Vegas (modeling the height of debauchery), but this particular scene likely takes place somewhere in between. I'm still not sure where nearly bare-knuckle brawling comes into play, but here's a little more of the ideas that Damon said served as the inspiration for the film's central conceit:

“Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world,” Damon said. “It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.”

Maybe the bout of fisticuffs is a metaphor for the little guy fighting back against a monolithic opponent, ie the government, a sort of David vs Goliath story? Then again, David wasn't a lethal assassin trained to be deadly with anything from his bare hands, to a magazine, to a sniper rifle, let alone a sling.
