A teaser poster for The Bourne Legacy has gone online and it’s a strong contender for Dumbest Tagline of 2012. The tagline: “Prepare for the Unexpected”. Really, Poster? “Prepare for the Unexpected.” How do you propose I go about doing that? Plastic tarps and duct tape? Buy up bottled water? What do you want from me, teaser poster. Also, this poster looks so bland that it might be a promo poster rather than something Universal’s actually going to put up in theaters.
Hit the jump to prepare for an expected poster. The film stars Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Oscar Isaac, Joan Allen, Albert Finney, and Edward Norton. The Bourne Legacy opens August 3rd. In a related story, we’ve update the first image from the movie with a hi-res version. Click here to check it out the image. [Update: Universal has informed us that this is not the official one-sheet for the film and has asked us to take the poster down. We'll of course bring you the actual poster for the film once it's released.]
Here’s the official synopsis for The Bourne Legacy:
The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films.
For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.

Pretty standard poster but nice to see that Renner is becoming a big enough name to have it displayed like that. Although I guess it was him or just the title.
damn it man why are you so negative. just a teaser let it be. mannnnnnnnnn what the shit is happening. i want some james coney island
oh come on. the guy is right. ‘prepare for the unexpected’? incredibly dumb line. its even worse than ‘expect the unexpected’. ane considering this is the movie taking a huge gamble by NOT having the title character in the film, marketing should be a little more compelling.
Hmm. Not just a teaser, though, is it?
It’s a teaser for the highly-anticipated next installment in a billion-dollar franchise from one of the top five blockbuster studios in the world. Think about that.
Then think about what YOU would do if you were in the marketing team for this movie. Think about how many people would be on that team. Think about the budget for the advertising campaign, and how much each member of that team would get paid for their creative input. How many concepts would you go through, how many ideas would fly, how many would land on the scrapheap?
Then think about whether you would be proud to unveil that poster and that tagline, and whether you think that this would be the best product you and your wealth of resources could produce.
I don’t think many people would consider this a top shelf poster, and with the time, effort and money that goes into these things, it should be top shelf EVERY FREAKING TIME.
This is lazy, uninspired, dull, moronic and offensive to anyone who knows how much money goes into these things.
James Coney Island sounds so damn good right now.
And I suppose Looney Toons are up next for a bashing with “Expect the unexpected”.
Gotta agree, that tagline is rubbish and lazy… The attempts at humour around it throughout the article are equally sh*t tho
Jesus man, it’s only a teaser…..Save the criticism for when the trailer comes out at least!
(As much as I would like a 4th Bourne, not really psyched with out Damon and Greengrass (fan of the trilogy and the books))
I have to take the side of that tagline being garbage. I’m just really tired of generic posters and taglines. This one is so run-of-the-mill, why even bother? It’d be more effective if the poster was just blank. Honestly, I long for the old-timey, direct type of lines like ‘The Maltese Falcon’s’ “It’s thrilling . . . it’s chilling . . . it’s the most baffling mystery story in years!” It might be a direct sales pitch, but at least it’s trying to excite you about something.
Then there’s “In space, no one can hear you scream” for ‘Alien.’ We need more of that.
You ain’t lying brother!
PREPARE FOR THE UNEXPECTED? Please!!!!
That has been used for decades!
Yeah, how do you prepare for the unexpected? I mean isn’t that impossible, since it’s unexpected? And why would you in the first place? Shouldn’t you be preparing for the expected?
I guess I should prepare myself for a crap action film with an actual villain as the main character instead of a born again boyscout.
It’s a teaser poster, stop being so damn boring all the time, Matt. If you are going to the movies with your mind set that you’re going to hate the movie… THEN YOU ARE GOING TO HATE THE MOVIE!
“expect the unexpected” surely? Prepare for is clumsy
I agree with Matt. Unimpressive poster on numerous counts…
Sure “it isn’t official” after the bad comments about it.
If your going to ask “What do you want of me, poster” you should end the sentence with a question mark, not a period. Baranga the Great has spoken!
Using the Bourne name without Damon is stupid. They could use the films to setup a different story but they really should change the title.
agreed LEM, although even more so, how can they use the Bourne name without the main character being Bourne? Makes little sense, just call Renner Bourne. I would be happier with that. Ala James Bond.
