THE BOURNE LEGACY Sequel May Team Jeremy Renner with Matt Damon

     June 26, 2012

Fans of the Bourne movies may finally get to see which action star is better: Matt Damon or Jeremy Renner.  In a recent interview, The Bourne Legacy producer Frank Marshall commented about a potential follow-up film as follows:

“My dream is that in the next one we see Matt and Jeremy team up.”

While that may certainly be an unstoppable duo (or a clash of titans, depending upon their alliance), audiences will have to wait until August 10th to see Renner step into Damon’s shoes.  The Bourne Legacy was recently pushed back a week due to fear of competing for audiences with Total Recall and, more likely, a desire to step out from under the shadow of The Dark Knight Rises. Hit the jump for more from Marshall, Renner and director Tony Gilroy, in addition to new images of Renner as Aaron Cross in The Bourne Legacy.

jeremy-renner-bourne-legacyIn an interview with Empire, Gilroy talked about developing a fourth Bourne film and how The Bourne Legacy fits into the previous framework:

“You thought you were seeing something you weren’t. What if there’s a much larger story? What if Treadstone wasn’t the only black-ops programme?

“I had never spent one moment thinking about how to do a sequel to Bourne Ultimatum. I first came in for two weeks just to spitball. I had a very random idea…so we started with that and it got more and more exciting. All of a sudden I was staring at something that had a great deal of resonance and was soulful and uncynical and was also gonna kick ass. So that was good.”

“He’s coming from a completely different background to Jason [Bourne]. He knows exactly who he is; he signed up to this…He wants to be part of a team. I can tell you he was in the military then he joined the programme. He’s a person who wants to be part of something… to have a sense of purpose. But then it’s taken away.”

As for future films, here’s the full quote from Marshall:

“You see there are several different programmes in the movie with different skill sets. All possibilities are open. My dream is that in the next one we see Matt and Jeremy team up.”

I’m sure his dream was also to get Matt Damon back for The Bourne Legacy. Didn’t happen.

    • THundersauresrex

This isn’t true. Damon has openly said that he wasnt done with Bourne but they were planning it with another character within the same universe. Damon just assumed he was DONE. Damon never EXITED. they just didn’t ask him back YET.

      • /tv/

Nooooo. Damon said he won’t do another Bourne unless Paul Greengrass directs.
Paul won’t work with Universal again due to their treatment of Green Zone.

So unless someone gives in it won’t happen.

Has nothing to do with them not asking Damon though. I’m sure they threw money at his feet.

      • Thesaurusrs

Damon would come back if Greengrass came back. It’s obvious from his previous comments that he felt Gilroy stabbed them in the back on Ultimatum.

Spoke to Matt at Comic-Con. He is very interested in coming back as Jason Bourne and this movie set’s it up perfectly (saw it tonight). There is a small part of me that thinks this whole issue with Matt was a publicity stunt (probably not). If the next movie does have Matt and Jeremy back, it will be awesome. Ed Norton plays the perfect person you love to hate.

  • mattinacan

    damon better start working out

  • dave

damon should come back for the sequel and he and renner should battle, but in a weird twist one gets knocked unconscious and the other decides to take his identity by switching faces with him….the unconscious one wakes up and wants his face back and they fight

  • Northern Star

Not going to happen, Damon stated clearly he won’t be back as Bourne unless Paul Greengrass returns to direct it, he ain’t so Damon won’t, period. Wanting Damon back just smacks of cash-in desperation, let it go…

  • Deepak

Didn’t Damon say he’d only return to the franchise if Greengrass does?

  • Leo

This is what he has been hoping would happen basically since Borne Legacy was announced. He said something along the lines of it leaves the doors open for Matt to return and meet face to face with Renner’s Character. It is not news that this is what his dream has been.

That would be awesome to see Damon and Renner team up! I’m super excited for the Bourne Legacy I don’t think it will disappoint. I’m not expecting it to be better or worse than any of the other Bourne films, I’m just ready for a sweet action flick!

If Matt doesn’t return then they’ll put that trash Ann Hathaway in as a fem fatale. Yeah, that’s how Hollywood does it.
