Ten years, eight films and over six billion dollars – Warner Brothers’ Harry Potter film franchise is coming to a close this weekend and by all accounts it is going out with a bang.  Leading up to its Friday debut, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 had already smashed the record for US pre-sales with $50 million worth of advanced tickets sold.  Today Warner Brothers reports that the film took in $43.5 million from midnight screenings alone: easily topping the previous record of $30 million set by Twilight Saga: Eclipse last summer.  A second Twilight Saga record now set to fall is the one-day US record of $72 million set by New Moon.  With many of Potter’s 4,375 theatres screening this final installment back-to-back throughout Friday, a first day of $80 million is anticipated. Here in the US the film could go as high $180 million for its first weekend – though anything over $158 million would smash the all-time 3-day weekend benchmark set by The Dark Knight in 2008.  Internationally Deathly Hallows 2 has taken in $58 million from 24 territories for a global cume of over $105 million.  We’ll update you throughout the weekend as the most successful franchise in history wraps up its remarkable run.

beat Bay so it would slightly crush his ego.

“man, my film isn’t the highest grossing film of the year. i guess i’d better put more work into the making of my films”

WOW! Just what I expected, great movie…If it(when it) breaks the dark knights weekend record, the dark knight rises will come back and top harry potter 8 next year. and then avatar 2 will blow them away later and the trend will go on and on…forever..that’s what happens.

To be fair, there were theaters that had all of their screens showing the film, something not many films get to have. Granted, most films don’t have that kind of midnight drawing power, but if most theaters had only done their 2-4 midnight screenings most films have gone by instead of 10-12 then the number wouldn’t be so high. It’s like people being impressed by huge grosses on a 3D film that charges $19 per ticket that breaks records set 8 years ago when ticket prices were only about $9 and by a film that didn’t have a 3D surcharge.

Then again, congrats Harry Potter, still impressive the demand was that high.

MAN IM SO GLAD THIS IS HAPPENING! Twilight doesnt deserve ANY OF ITS MOVIES AMONG RECORDS! THIS FILM DOES! IT WAS AMAZING!!!!! Theres no way in hell the last Twilight could ever top the Last Harry Potter, as a Huge HP fan, this is music to my ears!

      Correction, wonders to my eyes!

To those people saying Twilight will never beat Harry Potter don’t get so slap happy. The ONLY reason HP grossed more was because of the 3-D surcharge. If you take that off of each ticket price – and the surcharge was anywhere from $3 to $10 per ticket – Harry Potter LOSES BADLY!! Opening in fewer theaters and with no 3-D surcharge to boost the sales, Twilight still wins.

Well I for one love the Harry Potter movies and i’ve never read any of the books (Sorry!) but I’m a huge superhero fan and LOVE Marvel movies, but even I have to admit that next weekend with Captain America: The First Avenger opening, even WITH the standard 50-60% drop off from ticket sales, Potter will still be #1 and Captain America will be one of the few Marvel Movies to debut at #2

People love going to packed theaters at midnight

The movie, which I saw twice, deserves this!
    Twilight . . . disgusting really.

    • LittleMo

If you think Twilight is disgusting it doesn’t mean you’re a dumb man – it just means you are dumb no matter the gender. As for Harry Potter deserving this – you’re rigiht, it does deserve this. Because without the boost of the 3-D surcharge, HP loses to Twilight and loses badly.
