Back in May, we caught wind of a new horror project that Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli was cooking up. Details were slim at the time, but the film was said to center on a group of friends stranded in a ghost town overrun by nature. Today comes word that Brad Parker is set to helm the project based on an original idea by Peli, and we’ve got a few more plot details as well as a cast listing. It appears the ghost down in question is a city that was abandoned in the aftermath of a nuclear disaster, and as the sun sets on the town the group begins to hear “inhuman-sounding cries that indicate that they are not alone.”

The cast includes Jonathan Sadowski ($#*! My Dad Says), Jesse McCartney (Greek), Devin Kelley (The Chicago Code), Nathan Phillips (Snakes on a Plane), Ingrid Bolso Berdal (Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters), Dimitry Diatchenko (Get Smart), and Olivia Taylor Dudley. The script was written by Shane and Carey Van Dyke (The Sacred), and Peli is producing. Peli was originally thought to be directing this untitled thriller, but it appears Parker will be handling directing duties. We have yet to see a directorial follow-up from Peli after the franchise-spawning Paranormal Activity, as Area 51 is in the can and still sitting on a shelf somewhere. FilmNation is fully financing the untitled thriller. [Update: We’ve been sent the full press release, which informs us that filming has commenced in Eastern Europe. The release is included after the jump.]

Here’s the full press release:

(Los Angeles, CA) November 1, 2011 – FilmNation Entertainment’s Untitled Oren Peli Project commenced principal photography in Eastern Europe yesterday. The film is based on an original story by Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity, Insidious) who is also producing. Brad Parker is directing and Brian Witten (Dark City, Final Destination, Friday The 13th) is producing alongside Peli. Morten Søborg (In a Better World) has joined the production as cinematographer.

The film centers on a group of friends who become stranded in an eerie and desolate city. Abandoned years before in the aftermath of a nuclear disaster, nature has begun to reclaim everything. As the sun sets on this radioactive ghost town, inhuman cries cut through the night air. It seems they are not alone.

The ensemble cast includes Jonathan Sadowski, Devin Kelley, Jesse McCartney, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Nathan Phillips, Ingrid Bolso Berdal and Dimitri Diatchenko.

Oren Peli said, ““I love my job. I get to work with a talented director like Brad on the kind of scary movie I know I’d happily stand in line to see.”

“I really couldn’t be happier with our cast. We’ve brought together a group of fresh, talented young actors and they’re all getting ready to give us nightmares! In the best possible way!,” said producer Brian Witten.

FilmNation, who is fully financing the project, is handling international sales, and CAA and Linda Lichter are selling the film domestically.

“We looked at a lot of projects to find FilmNation’s first fully-financed movie, there were plenty of possibilities. When we were presented with the brilliant concept of this film, coupled with Oren’s pedigree it made the decision very easy,” said FilmNation Entertainment’s Glen Basner.

FilmNation recently completed House at the End of the Street starring Jennifer Lawrence and The Raven starring John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe.  The company is also currently in production on Mud starring Reese Witherspoon and Matthew McConaughey and directed by Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter). They are in development on Guy Hibbert’s screenplay Eye in the Sky with Oliver Hirschbiegel attached to direct; James McTeigue’s Message From the King from writers Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cornwell; F*cking Engaged which will star Jessica Biel; The Faces to be directed by Paul Solet; and The Amateur American to be directed by Ross Katz.
