Bradley Cooper in Early Talks to Voice Rocket Raccoon in Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY [UPDATED]

     August 22, 2013

Production is well underway on director James Gunn’s Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy, and it’s already looking terrific.  Gunn has assembled an eclectic and exciting cast that includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, David Bautista, Glenn Close, Michael Rooker, Lee Pace and John C. Reilly, and he showed off a surprising amount of footage at Comic-Con last month that really, really impressed.  With Guardians, Gunn is making a superhero film that is wholly his own, and the pic really looks like it could be something special.

Even though filming is underway, there are still two lead Guardians members that have yet to be cast: Groot, the talking tree, and Rocket Raccoon.  Vin Diesel has been strongly hinting that he’ll be voicing Groot, but now it looks like a fittingly left-field choice might be eyed for the role of Rocket: Bradley Cooper.  Hit the jump for more. [Update: The Wrap confirms that Cooper is indeed in early talks to voice Rocket Raccoon in the film.]

guardians-of-the-galaxy-rocket-raccoon-bradley-cooperSince Gunn was first hired, he has said many times that the reason he wanted to make Guardians was because of Rocket Raccoon.  The filmmaker previously described the character as “a little gnarled, miserable, pretty angry creature because there’s nothing else like him and it’s not easy to be.”  Gunn and Marvel have been taking their time in casting the voice of the CGI-created character, but now the folks over at Latino Review claim that they have extended an offer to the Oscar-nominated Bradley Cooper to tackle the role.

As with all Marvel rumors, it’s important to note that nothing has been officially announced.  Marvel is famously tight-lipped about its casting, so we probably won’t know for sure who is playing Rocket until they send out a press release.  That being said, Cooper somehow seems like a fine choice for Rocket.  He can play subversive and he sure as hell can play angry (see: Silver Linings Playbook), and I’d be interested to see what he brought to the character.

If LR’s report is indeed true, then an offer has only been extended Cooper’s way; there’s no guarantee that he’ll accept.  The actor is currently busy trying to put together his passion project, American SniperSteven Spielberg was attached to direct with a production start-date of later this year being eyed, but the filmmaker subsequently dropped out.  Now it appears that Clint Eastwood is circling the director’s chair, but he has another project to attend to first (Jersey Boys), so it could be next year before Cooper gets in front of cameras for American Sniper.  Could he possibly fill in some of his downtime with voice work on a Marvel movie?  We’ll know for sure soon enough.

Nothing against Bradley Cooper but…JON BENJAMIN! He is the only person who can voice Rocket Raccoon as far as I’m concerned.

    • Snarky

As much as I love H Jon Benjamin (and Jensen Ackles mentioned above) I think his voice may be a little too low register. That is, it may sound a little off-putting coming from a diminutive character no matter angry he may get. I actually can picture Cooper doing a great job of it.

I thought more about the Bradley Cooper from The Wedding Crashers and the Hangover movies and now I can see what they’re going for. Again, he’s a great actor so I’m sure it’ll be great.

The Latin review has such a stellar track record with Marvel news, so this just has to be true

  • Dev1359

Not sure I like this choice. Isn’t he supposed to have a cockney accent? I always imagined Jason Statham’s voice in the comics.

    • Nerdgasm

Black widow is suppose to have a Russian accent and Thor is suppose to be over the top old English but they have been changed. Not to mention Bradly coil have a good cockney accent up his sleeve. Foreign people constantly play Americans why can’t an American play something that isn’t American?

  • Kevin

They also wanted him to play Green Lantern and I think they would let him play almost any superhero if he wanted. I bet he’ll turn this down.

  • Jay

Him and his ex- Zoe Saldana working together again.

  • Bucky

I was kind of hoping for Ray Winstone, but this could work.

  • TwistedNic

H Jon Benjamin people, we need to freaking making this work.

I don’t know anything about GoG, but this sounds like a pretty bad choice… I’d go with someone like Jim Carrey, who’s an amazing actor and equally amazing at doing voices.

  • ZladSupersonik

Ray Winstone. Come on, Cooper? Why waste the man on a voice job he isn’t right for? Keep him on deck for another role that he’d be good at, Daredevil maybe?

    • Jonboy

Never thought of him as daredevil….that sounds like an awesome idea! Personally when I heard that Gregg Henry was going on location to GoG I thought he would do an interesting voice for Rocket. C’mon one person in the group should be over 50 y’know. The only thing is that Rocket seems to big the one that ties the whole team together so maybe it’s a significant role.

      • ZladSupersonik

Thing is, they probably won’t piss off the general audience if they decide to loose Rocket’s accent, since Guardians is not widely known. But it gives the character so much more. Gregg would have been an interesting choice. Michael Rooker is over 50, but I’m not sure if Yondu is a Guardian or how significant his role is.

I dont know I think ray stevenson would be an awsome rocket racoon n since it would only be his voice it should clash with his thor character

  • Salligator

I’m not against this, but if Latino Review is reporting it I doubt it will happen. Seriously, do any of their “scoops” ever turn out to be true?

    • Nerdgasm

A lot actually. They broke Hiddleston for Loki, Scarjo for BWidow. They broke that the destroyer would be in Thor. Almost the entire cast of GOTG. Thanos in Avengers. When ever Sam Jackson shows up. Broke the news on Couldon returning. They seem to have some deep ties with Marvel. Even ones that they don’t get right, the rumors were legit and those caters were in the loop just turned the roles Dow.

  • Person

Really like this choice, wonder if he’ll be doing mo-cap as well?

    • Nerdgasm

Nope. Maybe later in post for facial stuff. But Gunn announced early on that Groot and Rocket will be completely animated from scratch. No actor will be present on set cause they wanted movements they don’t think actors can create.

      • Person

Ah that makes sense, thanks. His voice alone should add enough personality anyway, hope he gets the gig.

  • bidi

well i’m definitely intrigued. based on the direction they went, Cooper probably could’ve been a pretty good Star Lord as well. i wonder if he’ll alter his voice or if he’ll just speak normally

  • Yurine

I would prefer Rocket Raccoon to have an accent.

    • Nerdgasm

How do you know he won’t? How ignorant are people these days? Tons of euros do Americans and many American actors are capable of doing Euros. Bradly cooper is a mimicker btw. Marvel probably did their research and dug up Coopers videos of him doing accents. They are out there. And almost every cast he’s been apart of comments on the depth of voices and accents he’s capable of.

  • Nerdgasm

All those people wanting Ackles or Benjimen don’t care about the comic book bottom line. I don’t want Rockrt sounding like archer and bob cause that’s the only voice that guy can do. And Ackles is a terrible actor specially in voice which would suck here. Cooper is the best pick. I live archer but that guy only does one voice and that is not rocket at all. Idiots.

  • Bob

    Great choice honestly.

At the top of the GOTG poster put names John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, with Vin Dielsel, also Bradley Cooper, and Benicio del Toro.

    Pretty stellar cast honestly.
