Apparently The Hangover Part II star Bradley Cooper is a burgeoning screenwriter in addition to being one of the most in-demand actors at the moment. Cooper appeared on Charlie Rose (via SlashFilm) earlier this week, and during their interview the actor revealed that he’s written an adaptation of Dan Simmons’ sci-fi epic Hyperion on spec with a friend. Cooper said that they have submitted the script to GK Films and are currently in negotiations to script the film adaptation. He adds, “Ideally I’d like to direct it, but there’s no way.”

The project has been in development for quite some time, with Scott Derrickson attached to direct in 2009. Cooper’s deal isn’t official by any means, but he’s definitely interested in tackling the material. Hit the jump for a synopsis of Simmons’ novel.

Here’s the synopsis for Hyperion:

On the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set forth on a final voyage to Hyperion seeking the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives. Each carries a desperate hope–and a terrible secret. And one may hold the fate of humanity in his hands. [Amazon]

NOOOOOO!!! This is the worst idea ever!! Don’t let any hack actor write a screenplay for a book that could urn into such a great movie. Too complex and important a work to let a pretty boy actor with no sci-fi writing experience…leave it to the pros like Abrams, Spielberg, Cuaron, del Toro or jackson…..

^^^^really??? you just named every big fan boy director who’s probably hasn’t even picked up this book. At least it seem Cooper is at least passionate enough about the project to write a treatment on his own time without even a word being spoken that he would ever actually get to script. So honestly i would be more than happy to see Copper take on the material that he obviously liked so much he decided to at least tried to script it. Also the Cooper your referring to is the guy he portrays in his films. Lastly, since you spoke of JJ star trek was only the second film he scripted/directed so i have as much faith in Cooper.

Wow, I don’t see how they could do it. I still struggled with some of those concepts the second time through. It does have the absolute best ending of anything ever, though. And to see the Shrike in live action…will make transformers look like pussies.

That would be great! I believe in Brad’s genius. Btw, I’m excited with the upcoming reality TV show.. Director Ewing Miles Brown says Sam Botta has lost 74 lbs (now 150 lbs.) for Movie Tech Studios pre-production of “Live Fearless” Sam Botta Hosts the upcoming reality TV show. :) in Pre-Production now with guests like Betty White, who says “Appreciate life while it’s happening!” Also “get over it” (referring to aging) and “I’m swimming as fast as I can” in reference to her work.

I could see Hyperion working as a HBO miniseries ala Game of Thrones – especially as it is part of a trilogy – but to try to cram all the characters backstories into one film would ruin being able to immerse yourself into some wonderful, detailed storytelling

From conception to release, most big budget epics get like 12 screenwriters anyway (with different numbers credited and uncredited). If this is actually happening, I don’t see why one of them can’t be Bradley Cooper. He seems like a smart guy and he can’t be any worse at story structure than any of the people responsible for the Fast and the Furious series.
