Director Derek Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine was one of the most celebrated films of last year.  This past February, we learned that he was planning to reunite with star Ryan Gosling for the crime flick The Place Beyond the Pines.  Cianfrance says people have told him that the film, which follows a motorcycle stunt rider (Gosling) who becomes a bank robber to support his newborn son, feels like a cross between The Deer Hunter and The GodfatherVariety reports that Sidney Kimmel Entertainment has come on board to finance and produce multi-generational crime drama and that Bradley Cooper has been offered a starring role.  If Cooper were to sign on, he would play a rookie police officer who crosses paths Gosling’s character.  Principal photography is set to begin this summer.

Hit the jump for a brief refresher on the multitude of other projects Cooper has at his disposal.

I’ve been unimpressed with Cooper’s recent performances (he’s like the Carson Daly of movie stars—inoffensive and forgettable), but I’m clearly in the minority since he carried Limitless to a surprising $76 million domestic gross with an $18 million opening weekend.  I do have a soft spot for the guy because he was so charming on Alias, but now I feel like he’s been recast as the hotshot jerk due to his performance in The Hangover (a role that I think was better suited to Vince Vaughn since it’s essentially the same character from Old School).

Hollywood clearly disagrees with my assessment because Cooper is on a hot streak.  Yesterday we reported that he was offered the role of Satan in Alex Proyas’ adaptation of Paradise Lost.  There are so many things wrong with that sentence, I don’t know where to begin.  He was also in talks for The Crow remake, and he’s attached to star in the drama The Words and an untitled buddy-cop action-comedy with Ryan Reynolds.

I haven’t written off Cooper and I think playing opposite Gosling in a Cianfrance crime drama would give the actor a real chance to show his range.  It certainly sounds like a better choice than an ill-advised adaptation of Paradise Lost.
