Brandon Routh Joins Season 3 of ARROW

The CW’s Arrow just picked up Peter Stormare and Devon Aoki, but apparently there’s still room on the season three roster for more because now Brandon Routh is in the mix, too.  Clearly Routh knows a thing or two about donning tights and rocking superhuman powers having starred in Bryan Singer’s 2006 release, Superman Returns, but for those of you who’d rather avoid show spoilers, we’ll save the specifics of his Arrow role for after the jump.  If you’d rather not wait until Arrow returns on Wednesday, October 8th at 8pm ET/PT for the big reveal, continue on to find out who Routh is bringing to Starling City.

brandon-routh-the-atomAs reported by TV Line, Routh will add another DC superhero to his resume courtesy of his new gig on Arrow because his recurring role will be Ray Palmer, the physicist also known as The Atom.  After harvesting the remnants of a white dwarf star, The Atom gains the ability to change his own size, shrinking down to the subatomic level, and alter the size of objects around him as well.

According to TV Line, here’s how we can expect The Atom to fit into the new season:

“An unparalleled scientist and inventor, Ray will play an unexpected role in the lives of Oliver and (rumored love interest) Felicity as the new owner of Queen Consolidated. Palmer’s plans for Queen Consolidated’s Applied Sciences Division will be shrouded in mystery.”

Come October, The Atom will be in the mix right alongside Stormare as The New 52 version of Count Vertigo, Werner Zytle, as well as Aoki’s Tatsu Yamashiro, aka Katana, an expert in martial arts who wields a sword that extracts and imprisons its victims’ souls, appropriately dubbed, the Soultaker sword.

We’ll keep an eye out for more updates on the new season of Arrow, especially as the show makes its way towards unveiling that teaser footage at San Diego Comic-Con.

    Brandon who?

    • YodaRocks

The guy who ruined Superman before Zack Snyder did.

      • Dark Knight of Steel

Routh didn’t ruin Superman, Bryan Singer did!

I hate the “try again” response. You don’t actually want him to try again and saying that isn’t encouraging anyone to do so. It also doesn’t sound boss either.

      • Verbal Kent

You try again, you couch critic sympathizer.

I think you may be giving way too much credit to a single actor. …or you really really hate him as an actor.

Routh. Todd Ingram in “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” Daniel Shaw in “Chuck.”

He was also in some DC movie…

OH HELL YEAH. The Atom will be a great addition to the Arrow cast.

  • Werefon

At least he will be payed with food.

Good for him! I always wanted Brandon Routh to get another opportunity, and this looks like his best change yet. Hope he does well and hope the character sticks around for a while.

I don’t think that Arrow will be part of the DC cinematic universe now with Blandon Ruth cast The Atom.

    • Kyle Chandler

Why would it? His superman was in a completely different universe.

      • Pk

Either way this Show is connected with the cinematic universe in any way. Amell said it himself

      • Oliver Queen

Stephen Amell has never once denied or confirmed whether Arrow is part of the DCCU, because he has mentioned many times that he has no idea what WB/DC has planned and it’s up to them not him or the Arrow crew.

      • World’s Finest Comments

Actually, he just recently confirmed that he’s not involved in Batman v Superman, so that’s SOME confirmation for now that’s against the merger…

      • Kyle Chandler

I still think they’re being coy without giving direct answers, and there is still room for them to connect them. Amell said pretty clearly that he isn’t in Batman vs. Superman (just try and stop me from calling it that!), but that doesn’t mean that him and gustin won’t show up when the Justice League movie happens.

DC is desperately playing catchup to marvel, and I just don’t see them missing the chance to tie the shows and movies together just like Marvel.

      • Verbal Kent

“Desperately playing catchup to “marvel”? Is that why they moved BvS back a year? Seems really really desperate…. DERP!

      • Kyle Chandler

No need to get defensive on DC’s behalf, Kent.

Also, it doesn’t seem you were able to key-in on the main point I was making

. The point is that marvel is enjoying unprecedented success in comic movies, and part of that is having it tie in to a connected universe. A universe brought together by movies and television (and comics and toys, etc.)

So yeah, I would say they’re playing catch up, though the actually point I was making was that they would be kind of silly to not take advantage of the fact that they have one pretty great TV show (Arrow) and another potential one on way (Flash).

      • Guest

“This Show is NOT connected”? Is that what you meant?

      • http://thenonessentials.blogspot.com/ Sean Chandler

Just because he’s the lead actor doesn’t mean he has the final say on that kind of thing. The show is NOT officially connected to the movies.

Where my Dylan Dog 2 at, Routh.

    • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

I think that’s the first time anyone has ever asked for that sequel.

  • James Franco

    Damn he’s quite the dreamboat!

    • Verbal Kent

And much like Franco… He sucks at acting.

      • True. However…

At least Routh is less of a self-obsessed douche than Franco.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

I dunno, he was pretty great in Scott Pilgrim.

      • James franco

        James Franco is decent

  • astroworf

I was hoping Ray would show up in the series since his long-time love, Jean Loring was Moira’s defense lawyer.

  • Kyle Chandler

Pretty interesting decision! The Atom is a LOT more powerful than any character we’ve seen on Arrow so far. They handled the Mirakuru pretty well, so i’m interested how they make this work.

  • Mezmero

This is worse than people saying Lebron is going back to the CAVS SMH. The Flash is introduced the science fiction side of DC so all this means is that is expanding on the TV side. Nobody is taking in the fact that the Justice Leauge is has only 2 unconfirmed roles Green Lantern and The Flash. Not saying it can’t happen but Green Arrow was never talked about in this line up.
I would rather see another team up with Arrow and Flash for now.

    • Kyle Chandler

If flash and green arrow ARE in the movies, then I think it would make sense to leave them out of Batman vs. Superman (since it is overloaded as is, and it seems like most the JL are just in glorified cameos, and they’ve already introduced these characters).

I still firmly believe that Gustin and Amell will be in the actual Justice League movie, though. Come on, DC, vindicate me!

      • eternalozzie

It would makes sense to tie their universes together now while it’s easy. Both Gustin and Amell have the acting chops to keep up with anyone in the Batman Vs Superman movie.

  • World’s Finest Comments

That’s good. Now he can afford to get an actual bed instead of newspapers.

    • Dude

Hungh? Are you implying he hasn’t been able to find work since? The guy’s has been in a LOT of stuff. TV & Movies. His most recent show Partners was on NBC, for christ’s sake.

      • World’s Finest Comments

Sorry for not praising his Oscar worthy performances in Dylan Dog and Crooked Arrows. Yeah, and Partners got canceled before it even made it to one season. And I wouldn’t brag about having a sitcom like that on your IMDB.

Face it, even if he wasn’t already the worse Superman in history (Which he is in spades!), he’d still be one of the blandest actors alive. The bland half of the gay couple in Zack and Miri, the blandest milk-toast ex in Scott Pilgrim, the guy just SUCKS! =)

      • nelson

Makes you wonder how he got this gig in the first place, because it wasn’t his “acting” talent that got him this job, that’s for sure.

  • Dark Knight of Steel

Routh didn’t ruin Superman, Bryan Singer did.

  • Grayden

Routh AND Stormare!? That is awesome. Super stoked for season three now.

Brandon Routh is a horrendous actor even if he wasn’t the worst Superman in history. Yeah, it wasn’t completely his fault that Superman Returns was an embarrassment, but you can’t use that same dumb excuse to cover his performances in Dylan Dog, Crooked Arrows, Partners and The Informers (Which all of his scenes were cut).

Amen brother…….. He’s got the acting chops of a frozen mop. He’s got zero charisma and no acting range
