A new trailer for Pixar’s upcoming film Brave has been released. The pic is the studio’s first fairy tale and revolves around a young princess (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) in the Scottish Highlands who defies an age-old custom, inadvertently unleashing chaos and fury in the kingdom.  The tone of the trailer is a bit scattershot.  On the one hand, there are grand statements about changing your fate and wanting freedom.  On the other hand, there’s a guy in a kilt mooning his fellow Scot.  Tone aside, the visuals look fantastic. Overall, the trailer is alright, but I think Brave still has the potential to be a great movie.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also features the voices of Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Kevin McKidd, Craig Ferguson, Robbie Coltrane, and Julie WaltersBrave opens in 3D on June 22, 2012.

brave-movie-posterHere’s the official synopsis for Brave:

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts.

Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, “Brave” is a grand adventure full of heart, memorable characters and the signature Pixar humor enjoyed by audiences of all ages. The film takes aim at theaters on June 22, 2012, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

  1. Odd. It looks more like a classic Disney fairy tale, like Mulan, than Pixar. Not that that’s necessarily bad, but I’ve always thought of Pixar as being it’s own thing.

    • i’m with you JLC. i think the missing part or the different vibe that’s lacking is the wit and sharpness. their kind of humor is always the best! smart, inventive, fresh. it looks absolutely beautiful, but one of my problems with HOW TO TRAIN, and why i wouldn’t call it as good as Pixar’s best, is the wit that Pixar does is not there. that film too looked incredible, and it was a fine film. but Pixar has the adult humor(and by that i don’t mean raunchy jokes) but those smart social commentary jokes or inventive jokes that flies of children.

  2. man that squash and stretch of the horse in profile totally reminds me of a run cycle done by frank thomas for fox and the hound

  3. It looks like “The Incredibles” or absolutely EVERY Pixar film that wasn’t called Toy Story… (as far as it goes with the human animation).

It looks fantastic, Pixar is solid. Not always perfect, but damn they swing for the fences always!

  4. Oh, good LORD, Matt.
    “tone” of a trailer?!?!
We’ve gotten to the point where we judge the overall “tone” of a movie by its trailer? I thought a trailer was supposed to set up a movie, showing characters, plot points and fluff to get excited about. Do you really have nothing better about which to write?

    • LOL great comment

Reminded me greatly of HHTYD as well. The Scottish accent, the wild hair on the characters.

Still got 6 months to go during which they will be refining the characters and storyline. don’t really get the story at all from the trailer. It seems to be limited to scenes before the “main conflict”.

Stunning visuals, as they should. But that looks HHTYD as well. ESP when the camera pan over the bay. Test drive much? But then the industry always learns from the best (:

  5. this looks pretty good, their accents are AWESOME! The girl looks bad ass! I think my sister will like this movie, she’s a tomboy with a regal feel to her. Just like me! Maybe i’ll take her to see it or something…
