Will BREAKING BAD Move to Another Network for Season Five?

If you’d like to save some time, the answer to the headline is, “No, probably not.”  But the chance that Breaking Bad will go off-network for season five is greater than zero.  Talks are ongoing between AMC and Sony Television to produce another season at the network.  AMC proposed an order of six to eight episodes rather than the normal thirteen; the creative team promptly rejected that offer.

Sources inform the LA Times Sony “sent feelers to at least three other cable networks” in a move that is likely equal parts negotiating tactic and backup plan.  More after the jump:

breaking-bad-character-portrait-bryan-cranstonAMC has previously had trouble locking down Mad Men.  In the initial struggle, I attributed that mostly to creator Matthew Weiner, who was seeking an unprecedented deal for a writer/producer on a basic cable show.  You could attribute the subsequent breakdown over season five negotiations to Weiner again, especially since he ended up with $30 million for three more seasons.  Then word leaked about budget cuts on The Walking Dead which, unlike Breaking Bad and Mad Men, is an unqualified commercial hit for the network.  Couple this news with the announcement that Frank Darabont had stepped down as Walking Dead showrunner — not to mention the fact that the Killing finale sucked — and it’s clear not all is well at the American Movie Channel.  AMC is starting to develop a reputation as the Marvel of the TV world: quality product, but tough negotiators.

To reiterate, the acclaimed drama will almost certainly stay at AMC.  What intrigues me is creator Vince Gilligan’s flexibility on the scope of the series.  The initial plan (purportedly) was a four season arc.  Given the negotiations, that has obviously been extended to at least five seasons.  As the Times notes, it’s unlikely any outside network would sign up for a one-and-done — if the show does go to another network, we may expect at least two more seasons.

By the way, any guesses for the three networks?  Breaking Bad would be a great fit for FX, though I don’t know they’d be interested.  I bet Starz got a call — that would be good for exposure as they try to develop into a major player among premium cable networks.  Nothing else fits quite so well, though you might as well ask HBO if you’re sending out resumes.

No matter the channel, as long as it stays on the air, check out our recaps of Breaking Bad here.

I can see Breaking Bad going to Showtime, FX or HBO. But I think Breaking will stay at AMC and the show will probably reach a Sixth and final season.

Gilligan wants to end it after season 5 and I honestly think that would be the best thing. How many plots can you still do in this story? Better end it on a high-note instead of a washed out product.

And what’s currently going on at AMC? I love their shows, but from what I hear they are cutting costs everywhere and I’m more than afraid that sooner or later this will make the quality of their shows suffer enormously. Hope they are able to turn things around soon.

How long Breaking Bad is going to air needs to be settled now, today, first and foremost. AMC needs to be reminded that we love them for getting behind Gilligan and company to bring us this very special show. They also need to be reminded that milking Breaking Bad for one second, let alone an entire season will undo the magic and make us fucking hate them. Gilligan learned everything from working on the X-Files? He needs to set a concrete target for the show and figure out how they are going to close it and AMC needs to do continue to do what they have done so well… Let them tell the story that matters. COULD I watch Walt live a long and prosperous criminal career before finally seeing the swan song? Possibly, but the audience deserves more and I need to trust that I am not going to be overfed Breaking Bad until the point that the original story doesn’t fucking matter any more. Finish it!

I just hope it picks up. So far this season’s been pretty weak. I’ve had more than enough Hank being cranky in a hospital bed, and does anyone care about the crazy clepto lady subplot? All those great outdoor shots that stylistically set the show apart have been replaced by the gloomy meth factory. Man, they have got to blow that place up soon (one way or another) just for the sake of the series. R-rated throat slittings will only get you so far.

Agreed. I have been left seriously underwhelmed so far this season. Nothing of significant note has even happened.

This season so far, has been raping up ALL the sub plots of the previous season. With the car wash and hank getting the lab notes, the show can finally move forward.

What needs to happen is Walt and Jessie hanging out and relaxing for the first time ever in this show

Best. SHow. EVER! Im sure it will all work out. If nothing else, the cast and crew should all just take a paycut. im sure most of the crew can find jobs after breaking bad. like all the writers for sure. and the directors like adam bernstein and michelle mclaren. also the cinemotographers like michael slovis, since the show has some of the most unique cinematography ive ever seen. also the best ive ever seen. and the cast can proabably always. for sure bryan cranston and aaron paul. and bob odenkirk, jonathan banks, and the guy who plays gus (cant think of his name right now). the rest can probably at least make sopme guest appearences on other shows for sure. so if you all take a pay cut, then you can have more money for the show and also not compromise it for its final season or cut it down, and it will go down as one of the greatest, if not the greatest tv show in history.
