On the red carpet of this year’s Saturn Awards, I was able to get a few minutes with Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan. While he was guarded about spoiling any of the upcoming twists and turns, he revealed there “is some crazy-ass shit coming up” and that the show gets “darker, edgier, crazier than ever.”
In addition, we also talked about the opening shots of the fifth season, does he know how the final season will play out, is there any chance the final season could be more than eight episodes, and a lot more. Hit the jump to watch.
And if you missed Gilligan telling us that he’d like to do a western next, click here for those comments. He also talked about the ‘rumored’ Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) spinoff.
Vince Gilligan Time Index:
- 0:10 – Talks about preventing spoilers for the upcoming season, but says there “is some crazy-ass shit coming up.” He comments on the first eight episodes of the fifth and final season.
- 1:05 – Says the meaning behind the opening to the first episode of this season will soon be revealed and there will be a payoff, but not necessarily in the first eight episodes.
- 2:00 – Comments on mapping the story out beforehand or figuring it out as the show progresses. He admits there’s still a lot they don’t know.
- 3:20 – Although Gilligan now thinks that 16 episodes won’t be enough for the full story, he also says that the promise has been made and they’re going to have to make it work. He says the fact that Cranston has floated the notion of a Breaking Bad feature was new to him.

The audio sucks…you guys need to get a better mic or something
i think when they write the next part of the season, they should write it as theres no limit, then see how many episodes that is. once they are done writing, then condense it down to 8, but they should just see how that would play out, even if they cant use it all.
