Recently a tweet regarding the sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance popped up and has since caused some confusion amongst the internet faithful. The tweet was in regards to Nicolas Cage’s role in the film, and caused many a website to speculate that the actor would be portraying both the hero and the villain in the follow up to Mark Steven Johnson’s 2007 film.

To set things straight we contacted the source himself – co-director Brian Taylor (Crank). According to the filmmaker, who is directing the sequel along with Mark Neveldine, Nicolas Cage will indeed be playing two roles, but not the villain as previously thought. Instead, Cage will play both Johnny Blaze and the Ghost Rider in the film. This contrasts with the original Ghost Rider where Cage played Blaze, but left his demonic alter-ego with the stunt team and special FX guys. While this news debunks the Nic Cage good guy/bad guy dual role, it does justify the tweet which foresaw a Nic Cage classic in the making. More after the jump.

In regards to the tweet, which said:

The dual role of blaze/zarathos will be a nic cage classic

Taylor had this to say:

zarathos is the spirit of vengeance that inhabits john blaze when he becomes ghost rider.  unlike the 1st movie, where the rider was stiffly acted out by a various stunt guys, nic will be playing all the ghost rider stuff himself – and we are creating a whole physical language for the demon that is different from the human blaze.

While the original Ghost Rider proved to be a ho hum affair with a more-than-appropriate Nicolas Cage stealing the film from his clunky visual FX manifested alter ego, one can’t help but get excited with the direction Taylor and Neveldine are taking the sequel.

By allowing Cage to act out both roles and creating “a whole physical language for the demon,” it’s reasonable to assume the actor will bring the same fiery personality he exhibited in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans (which was great), and give the Ghost Rider, who was something of a stiff in the original, a much needed personality. Cage is no stranger to duo personalities, after all, having starred in the Spike Jonze flick Adaptation where he played multiple versions of himself throughout.

The directing duo of Taylor and Neveldine, meanwhile, know how to channel raw energy, having directed both Crank and Crank: High Voltage with gusto, and an appropriate amount of testosterone to boot. They know how to make an actioner, and with a budget that is reportedly north of $70 million, and a shooting schedule set to commence in November and last into February, this will be their biggest film to date. Whether they can pull this off remains to be seen, but they’re already headed in the right direction.

Here’s the synopsis for the film:

Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider (Nicolas Cage), is hiding out in remote Eastern Europe and struggling to repress his curse. Blaze is recruited by a sect to take on the devil, who wants to take over his mortal son’s body on the boy’s birthday.

As of now the cast includes Cage, Ciarán Hinds, Idris Elba and Violante Placido.  Hinds will be playing the role of the devil, while Placido will play the boy’s mother.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance will hit theaters on February 17, 2012.

I just hope they release some official images soon so every website can stop posting these awful screenshots from that first turd.

Cage still voiced GR in the first film, and there are even pictures out there of him acting out GR with a green hood on. So he DID play GR, just body wise not for the majority of the time.

The first Ghost Rider was one of the WORST movies I’ve ever seen in my life. I literally regret wasting 2 hours of my life watching it. I’m a fan of the Ghost Rider character, but I have zero faith that this movie will be any better than the first.

i share the exact same feelings as you about the film…i too am a huge fan of GR as a character and to see his transition to the big screen executed so poorly was heartbreaking….it bothered to say the movie sucked because i like the character so much but it had to be said….that being said, i don’t feel it could get any worse…if it got better, i dont know how much better….maybe a lot if we are surprised, or maybe not much or not enough to satisfy fans…..but being that the studios care more about $$ than doing the right thing and letting fans get what they want is sad…if sony didnt come to an agreement to greenlit the next film by the end of this year, they would have lost rights, the property would have reverted to marvel studios, and we would know for sure that we would actually get a good Ghost Rider film….but sony wants their $$ so they made sure to greenlit a film without even having a coherent story, a good cast or writer/director on board, just so they dont lose the rights…in them going with the neveldine/taylor duo is iffy…..they made crank fun and funny….but that doesn’t say they weren’t bad films…they were fun trash and exploitation shot poorly but funny nonetheless….but if they plan to make GR2 over the top like that, with cheap shaky cameras, that is not what a GR movie needs…..their path is unknown on how they will deliver, but at this point and as a fan, i would hope for the best but plan for the worst…in other words, look forward to it but dont over excite yourself for it…..mark steven johnson was a hack….while daredevil wasnt horrible, he didnt do it justice, and he claimed to learn from his mistakes when he did GR but obviously that was even worse than daredevil. I’m hoping that these guys make GR2 more fun and exciting with action and less crappy acting….even if not the best, just make it better than the first one but this isnt the team i would have chosen for a big budget film, especially with a storyline that crappy…..maybe if it sucks again….it wont make $$, the studio wont greenlit anymore films for a while, they will lose rights (like whats happening with the punisher; god knows why its so hard to get a punisher film right)….and maybe finally, marvel will get the rights back to the character that they created in the first place.

I’m keen as chips. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans was killer and I have nothing but faith in the abilities of Taylor and Neveldine.I’m certain that this will redeem the original and I’m glad we’re not going to see another reboot of a potential franchise a la Punisher & Hulk.

In a perfect world, David Lynch would be directing the next Ghost Rider.
