Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids is the little comedy that could. Despite a modest budget and no A-list stars, the Judd Apatow-produced film has been a consistent staple on the box office charts week after week. Now, after recently becoming the highest grossing entry in Judd Apatow’s library, Bridesmaids has become the highest grossing R-rated female comedy ever (via THR). The film’s current domestic tally sits at $152.9 million, enough to dethrone the previous “top R-rated female comedy” record-holder Sex and the City (apparently the term “comedy” has a loose connotation).

The script by star Kristin Wiig and Annie Mumolo hit that sweet spot of insane hilarity paired with a sizeable amount of heart. The film also owes a great amount of its success to director Feig (Freaks and Geeks) and the tour-de-force cast that includes Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Jon Hamm, Chris O’Dowd and stand-out Melissa McCarthy. If you’ve yet to see Bridesmaids, you’ve definitely missed out on one of the funniest movies of the year.

  1. well thats not that hard to achieve considering it is probably the only female R-rated comedy out there

  2. Anyone else experiencing problems with this site? Ever since the Transformers “six directors” story was put up, I can’t see anything beneath that story on the main page, nor can I get to that story. I only see the link and the Optimus Prime photo, and when I click on the link I still only can see the photo.

I CAN see the more recent stories that are being posted after it (as well as the ones that are in the featured links at the top of the page), but none of the older stories that were posted before the Transformers one.

  3. am pretty sure that this is the only R rated female comedy EVER lol and sex and the city dont count for nothing

  4. This would be more impressive if there was a list of the top grossing R-Rated Female comedies. Other than the two listed (and Sex and the City 2), I can’t think of any others. And comparing Sex and the City to Bridesmaids isn’t a good comparison. One was aimed only at women while the other was aimed at all adults.

  5. Of course Sex and the City is a comedy. No one takes it seriously. And the women that live vicariously through those characters are pathetic.

  6. Bridesmaids was not for children, yet there were a few underage children in the audience. The kids laughed the loudest at the raunchy jokes such as when one actress said that she wanted balls in her face because she hadn’t had sex in a long time. The movie starts out with one bridesmaid having sex in 6 different positions with a man who is just using her. The kids in the audience laughed at the woman’s legs being up in the air and moving in different directions because the man on top of her was penetrating her aggressively.
It was funny at times and I laughed but there was no need for all of the sex and raunchy language. Sorry to see what movies are today compared to years ago, no wonder our teens are getting pregnant too early. Producers of this movie should be ashamed.

  7. The Sex and the City movies are hilarious, actually, ESPECIALLY the second one. Anyone who thinks they aren’t comedies, obviously hasn’t seen them. Why don’t you try checking things out before being judgmental?

Bridesmaids may not have an “A list” cast, but these ladies are hilarious and very successful in other roles – they come from shows like Saturday Night Live, Gilmore Girls, and the Office, all very successful shows
