The first trailer for director Allen Hughes’ (The Book of Eli) political thriller Broken City has been released.  Mark Wahlberg stars as a private detective who is hired to identify the lover of a powerful politician’s wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones).  Russell Crowe plays the morally ambiguous politician with plenty of gusto, and there look to be some fun scenes where Crowe and Wahlberg go toe-to-toe.  The soundtrack on the trailer is a bit distracting and the January release date isn’t super promising, but this could be a nice little thriller with some interesting performances.

  1. No, I have to agree with him. I don’t think it was because it was “black music.” I think its because its a political thriller and its using music that doesn’t go with the tone of the actual movie. Much like when I see a period piece with hard rock guitars in the score. It just doesn’t go with it. It should of just been an original score.

  2. I don’t think the music works for the movie either – and I’m black. The reasoning is perfectly valid – the tone of the “black” music is much more reminiscent of an action film than a political thriller. Imagine the film Michael Clayton or The Manchurian Candidate with that music. It doesn’t fit. But Mark Wahlberg tends to make action films and he’s the headliner, so that’s what they put it in the trailer.

BTW – Calling it “black music” is actually just as offensive as what you’re accusing him of. Only difference is he’s right and you’re wrong.
