Bryan Singer Confirmed to Direct X-MEN: APOCALYPSE; Will Focus on FIRST CLASS Characters

Last week, X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer tweeted that in 2016, the franchise would continue with X-Men: Apocalypse.  We assumed that since he tweeted that information, he would be directing the film.  Vulture has now confirmed that Singer will be returning to helm the sequel, making it his first back-to-back franchise venture since X-Men and X2.  Furthermore, Days of Future Past will lead directly into X-Men: Apocalypse, and “the new film is intended to focus strictly on the younger McAvoy-Fassbender cast”.  So where does that leave the franchise superstar Wolverine?  Perhaps off on another solo adventure?  Either way, it looks like DOFP will probably be a bit of a cliffhanger, so I’m glad Singer will be staying at the helm as the series moves to its next chapter (assuming DOFP is good, and as someone who thinks X2 is the best film in the franchise, I think it will be).

X-Men: Days of Future Past opens May 23, 2014.  X-Men: Apocalypse opens May 27, 2016.

Probably good news. Would’ve liked to have seen Vaughn returning to finish off what he started but DOFP does look good and hopefully a return to form for Singer. Glad they’re focusing on the First Class cast too. Roll on the 80s!

They were going in the right direction with First Class ’til they connected it with the previous x-men movies. Bad move.

Mmm…Yeah, I’d agree with that. I was kinda done with those guys to be honest but I didn’t mind that Jackman popped up in First Class. The man IS Wolverine.

First Class had all the hallmarks of a reboot and the chance to redo certain things but I guess it was a semi-reboot in the end. Also the fact that Fassbender and McAvoy look nothing like Stewart and McKellen doesn’t help. Still, I’m excited about DOFP.

I’d also heartily agree that First Class was a step in the right direction too. Not perfect but I’d probably edge it out over X2. And First Class did embrace the comics much more than the first two. Especially in the costumes. I still hate those black leather costumes.

      • OhGodWhy

Yep, agree with the costumes and the way all things looked so metallic, shiny and perfect. Haha. Just a minor flaw but still.

I doubt the original cast will get much screen time aside from Patrick Stewart, Gandalf, and Hugh Jackman. There will be no James Marsden and probably minimal Halle Berry and Anna Paquin, who I think were the weak spots of the original X-Men films. They’re building of First Class and they want to feature their bankable stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and Peter Dinklage. I’m excited, I think it’s a great way to pass the torch from the old cast to the new.

I’m also excited we’re getting into an Apocalypse storyline. I’ve always thought that seeing Apocalypse, Mister Sinister, and the Four Horsemen would translate really well to the screen. I hope they bring Ben Foster back as Warren Worthington, he was horribly underused in that mess of a movie The Last Stand.

The timeline is all screwed up at this point … How can they focus on first class characters for Apocalypse when the main character of the 4 horseman, Angel/Archangel, hasn’t been born yet? Singer should have never been allowed back near these movies. He will make Wolverine a Horseman so he can be the diva star again.

      • Doug_101

That would actually work. Wolverine served Apocalypse as Death in “The Twelve” crossover. I take your meaning though – how can Magneto be the biggest threat they’ve faced in X1 when they fought Apocalypse in the past?

      • McA

At this stage, and not to give the twist away for DOFP but the First Class timeline is an alternate timeline to the original trilogy. Time travel yo! Also according to thebentbullet, Magneto has been in prison for like 50 years so it’s pretty firmly established as an alternate timeline.

The only thing that really bothers me is how, apparently, Apocalypse appears in DOFP. I’d call bullshit on it – considering how far out it is from release to know what the post credit scene is – but a lot of reports appear to back it up.

I few things to remeber. Angel was an original member. So discounting X3 there is a possible for him to show up. Second It appears it will be a time jump story. Last the Wolvering things sounds plausible but for the love god dont….

I have a feeling DOFP is also going to focus on the FC cast. I think the old guys are just in it to set up the story and make for an awesome spectacle. The new guys will probably carry the story line.

Oh God let the rights be returned to Marvel already and that Disney should not be directly involved in the making of their movies. I hate the direction where they’re going with their movies, TOO MUCH comedy. I miss the vibe of Ironman 1 and The Incredible Hulk. Not as serious as DC’s movies but are packed with action, and MINOR comedy.

    • Doug_101

Never going to happen. Fox is like Will Ferrell in Step Brothers (to paraphrase): “No way amigo, this is MY superhero franchise now.”

  • The Flobbit

Great news; the best, most assured director, and the best cast. LOVE James MacAvoy and Michael Fassbender – two of the most challenging and talented actors of their generation.

Apocalypse certainly sounds like a formidable, threatening villain. Bring it on.

Solid news in my opinion. I think Singer’s a very talented director and on top of that he’s proven he’s got a good grasp of the Marvel universe, so I’m excited to see how he expands it.

I agree that X2 is the best film in the series, with First Class as a close second. Combining the FC cast with the X2 director’s pedigree could be great. Color me excited.

I read a spoiler that Magneto (Fassenbender version) will be a body that Apocolypse will host and will be revealed at the end of DOFP at the end of the credits. If that’s true than that is very disapointing to hear that Singer can’t give us a real version of Apocolypse.

    • McA

+1. I’m hoping it’s bullsh#t as it’d be a waste of Fassbender as he’s an awesome Magneto but also, such a waste of an all time great X-Men villain. Really hope they don’t go in that direction.

      • Strong Enough

        Minus 1. your idea sucks

    • Faptain America

I read the same on Screenrant. He might just possess Magneto at the start, just to get going. It doesn’t make sense to just throw away Magneto and have Fassbender play a whole other character. I think we’ll get the real thing, big and angry.

      • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

Yea that’s where I read it too. I hope if it’s true that it’s more in line to what you are saying. Otherwise we’ll have X3 all over again w the Pheonix and Jean fighting over who was in control.

Gonna throw it out there – because here’s hoping they actually cast an actor as Apocalypse – Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Apocalypse has quite a flowery use of language and I reckon a guy like Ejiofor, who has a background in Shakespeare, would be a perfect fit. Plus he’s got that particular type of grin that would be on the money for the biggest bad in the X- universe.

  • mattinacan

If Apocalypse is simply inhabiting young Magneto’s body and we don’t get a proper character i am going to go ape shit. They should be two separate characters.

  • TheDarkNut

There are no alternate timelines (YET)..First Class is not a reboot..it is a prequel to the original trilogy. The First Class cast will be in DoFP and whatever spins out of that storyline will be in Apocalypse.

    • McA

Read the bentbullet.com. It’s an alternate timeline.

      • TheDarkNut

McA ..Read it..he was not locked up for 50 years..they built a prison for him 50 years ago. ALL Fox X-Men & Wolverine movies are one universe. Though there are contradictions in them.

      • McA

Yeah I did…again. It’s an alternate timeline man. Even the Trask site confirms this.

      • McA

And if you read the end of the article on thebentbullet, he has been in that prison for 50 years.

  • TigerFIST

I’m still curious on why Matthew Vaughn dropped out of directing. Was that ever covered? And Matt do you really feel that X2 was better than first class. That’s fine of course just curious…

    • McA

Apparently to do The Secret Service although there was a rumor going about he might be doing Star Wars. That obviously didn’t pan out but he does have a habit of dropping out of things – albeit he was on good terms with Fox this time around – and not doing sequels.

He did talk up this sequel even before he’d signed on and he is a credited screenwriter on DOFP along with Kinburg and Goldman. He apparently got on well with Singer but I’d always figured he maybe wanted to take the franchise in a different direction than Singer did but that’s just a guess. Bit disappointed he either wasn’t asked or declined to direct the sequel to DOFP.

  • Iron Man 3 is a Mess

X2 just like the rest of the X movies were completely watered down BS that didn’t do justice to the source material in the slightest. Let’s hope Singer WON’T be returning after DoFP.

    • paul h

Prolly a lot of that has to do with the studio head at the time, I don’t know what he had against the films but iirc he slashed the budget & shooting schedule of the first 2 films, then that turned into the who thing with Singer when he went to do SR so Fox rushed x3 out before too… I dunno, prove they’re better or something? who the hell knows what goes in in the minds of these folks?

    • IamZachrifice

There’s the stereotypical hater response. The 2nd one was a solid film in general and a reason why studios are now making films like this possible. Don’t go see DoFP or Apocalypse if you hate Singer soo much. Oh that’s right, you will anyways.
