We recently reported that Matthew Vaughn, director of X-Men: First Class, was stepping down from heading up the sequel, X-Men: Days of Future Past.  On the shortlist of replacement directors was one Bryan Singer, who was already acting in a producing capacity for the sequel.  Singer has now been confirmed as the director for X-Men: Days of Future Past.  There is still no explanation as to why Vaughn stepped aside, but he is in the process of inking a deal to stay on with the project as a producer.  (He did turn in the film’s screen treatment after all.) Hit the jump for more on Singer’s attachment to direct X-Men: Days of Future Past.

bryan_singer-x-men-first-class-sequelDeadline reports that Fox made quick work of replacing their vacant director’s chair and will likely be able to keep their July 18th, 2014 release date as a result.  Fans should be familiar with Singer’s work as he wrote and directed both 2000′s X-Men and 2003′s follow-up, X2.  He also turned in the script for Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class along with an ensemble of other writers, including Vaughn.  We also got confirmation of the title from Singer recently.  It follows the 1980s’ comic storyline written by Chris Claremont that alternates between a present day battle against the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and a future timeline where an assassination of a government official has led to Sentinels roaming the land and mutants held prisoner in internment camps.
The cast from the original film is expected to return, including Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy

  1. Uhhh – X-Men 1 & 2 ???

Plus, he was the contributing producer who helped make First Class such a class act.

I for one am excited. First Class was such a rushed production, but came out amazing, in my eyes. I’d look forward to seeing what he would do for this.

By the way – Strong Enough – Am I to assume you’ve never seen THE USUAL SUSPECTS???

Go home. But thanks for the post. =)

  2. I completwely agree with Strong Enough. That sucks. X2 has to be the most overated film of all time. It was good but people seem to think it was great just because it was slightly better than the two films that bookended it. I recently rewatched The Usual Suspects and that really wasn’t as clever as I remember. With the denouement out of the way it’s average and derivative. And then of course the pathetic chick flick Superman Returns. This is not a good thing.

  3. Glad Bryan is back to X-men again! I can’t tell you how overjoyed I was to see Vaugn outed as director!!! Wolverine hasn’t been a cool character since x-2 anyways, hopefully Bryan can’t wrangle control of Wolverine’s ridiculous hairdos from Jackman and bring him back to a more classic comic book look.

  4. I think it´s great news. The film keeps Vaughn as a producer and Singer finally gets to do his X-Men 3, which hopefully will tie in with X1, X2, and XMFC and provide some coherence to the franchise so it can move forward in a solid way. If the really do Days of Future Past then Rachel Summers will have to feature prominently, which means Jean and Scott were at some point alive during that dystopian future. Let´s hope the script is smart, amazing enough to scrap the Last Stand.

  5. Honestly first class was good but had nothing on singers x-men. Where singer kept an ensemble of characters on an absolute shoestring first-class tended to shift tone depending on which characters interacted. First class had tremendous style but singer will help to streamline it.

  6. You guys actually think singer will do better than Vaughn ???! FOH!! Singers Xmen flix along with superman returns were HORRIBLE!! But oan “the usual suspects” was a well written screenplay and dialogue was on point… Vaughn > singer ….I hope Vaughn does episode VII!
