Bryan Singer Talks X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

     February 10, 2011

With its trailer premiering on the interwebs earlier today, X-Men: First Class is currently riding a wave of online buzz. That momentum in mind, producer Bryan Singer recently discussed various elements of the film, including Jennifer Lawrence’s turn as Mystique and Nicholas Hoult’s Beast, saying:

“We have younger versions of Mystique and Beast, so I’m very excited about them and what they bring to the film. Jennifer Lawrence’s work [as Mystique] and Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of Beast — these are characters that we’ve seen in the earlier films, but then these are very different portrayals and you have to bring a lot of attention to those.”

For more on what Singer had to say about X-Men: First Class, including its comic-book summer “competition” and Jason Flemyng and Lucas Till’s performances, hit the jump. Directed by Matthew Vaughn, X-Men: First Class also stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, January Jones, and Rose Byrne. The film opens June 3rd.

bryan_singerSinger talked with Hero Complex about not letting other summer releases such as Green LanternThor, and Captain America: The First Avenger get in the way of what they were trying to accomplish with First Class:

“You can never think about that.”  That’s just something you can torture yourself with or stress out about, but you can’t do that and sit there and think, ‘What are they doing? We need to do that.’ That’s the worst thing you can do. You have to make your own movie. It needs to exist in its own universe in terms of perception. Your goal is to make a cool movie. You need to stay focused on that goal.”

Singer also talked about Jason Flemyng and Lucas Till’s performances as Azazel and Havok respectively, adding:

“I’m also excited about Jason Flemyng as Azazel, which is a really cool character. It’s like this sinister alter ego of Nightcrawler in a way, which again brings some of the things that we like about that character but at the same time has a different quality. And I really, really like [Lucas Till as] Havok, who we’re bringing in [to the continuity] at a sort of  a different time, relative to the comic book lore. It’s an extremely cool character. What’s great, too, about all of these characters is that they haven’t honed their abilities yet. Havok is a danger to himself and everyone around him. That’s where this movie is at — the recruiting of these mutants and bringing them together.”

Make sure you click over to Hero Complex to check out the rest of Geoff Boucher’s interview where Singer discusses the film’s alignment (or lack thereof) with the comics. As for my part, I am pretty impressed by what I saw from the film’s trailer. While two-minute cuts can be deceiving, I would say the First Class trailer is probably the strongest footage of the previously mentioned summer competitors thus far. Here’s to hoping it can carry that quality throughout the entire film.

I admit I groaned at first seeing the older movie footage, but then business really picked up and I must express that I am interested in seeing this film. I have high hopes for Fassbender and Mcavoy, anxious to see if any of these kids can act.

What’s the name of the song being played in the X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Trailer? Want to download it badly! This trailer rocks! I can understand the hangups people have with regard to the choice of characters in this new film but I believe that they should just enjoy it for what it is and not think about the previous films. I’ve yet to be disappointed by anything Matthew Vaughn has directed and, after seeing this trailer, have faith that this will be a wonderful summer film. Of the three Marvel films coming out, this certainly looks to blow the competition out of the water.
