In May 2009, we reported that Fran and Kaz Kuzui were going to re-launch Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a feature film but without the input of Joss Whedon (and after reading Buffy: Season Eight, that might be a good thing). In a press release, it was announced that Warner Bros. has now optioned the rights from the Kuzuis and that Atlas Entertainment and Vertigo Entertainment will produce. Whit Anderson has been brought on to write the script. Atlas’ Charles Roven said of the new take “Details of the film are being kept under wraps, but I can say while this is not your high school Buffy, she’ll be just as witty, tough, and sexy as we all remember her to be.” Hit the jump for the full press release.

WARNER BROS. PICTURES SHOWS ITS FANGS WITH A
“BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER” REBOOT
LOS ANGELES, NOVEMBER 11, 2010 – Atlas Entertainment announced today it is rebooting the beloved franchise, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with Warner Bros. Pictures. Atlas’ Charles Roven and Steve Alexander will produce the feature film alongside Doug Davison and Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment (The Ring, How to Train Your Dragon, The Departed). Whit Anderson is writing the script.
Warner Bros. Pictures optioned the rights from creators Fran and Kaz Kuzui, and from Sandollar Productions (Sandy Gallin and Dolly Parton), for Atlas and Vertigo to produce. Buffy the Vampire Slayer first appeared as a film in 1992, subsequently becoming a cult hit and spawning the wildly popular television series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, among many others.
“Whit approached us with an exciting idea about how to update Buffy,” said Roven. “There is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character’s return to the big screen. We’re thrilled to team up with Doug and Roy on a re-imagining of Buffy and the world she inhabits. Details of the film are being kept under wraps, but I can say while this is not your high school Buffy, she’ll be just as witty, tough, and sexy as we all remember her to be.”
Whit Anderson is represented by CAA, Wirehouse Entertainment and Julian Zajfen at Ziffren, Brittenham, Branca, Fischer, Gilbert-Lurie & Stifflemen.

What a complete waste of time.
Why bother? Most fans won’t touch it unless Whedon’s name is on it.
That’s a pretty ignorant statement. As if the lure of Buffy is solely related to Joss Whedon. First, he’s proved that he is out of ideas because Season 8 completely went down the drain by issue 35. Buffy was solid because of everyone that was involved from the writers to the cast. Granted, Joss Whedon is a bad ass but the character of Buffy will outlive him. Any fans of the series will just be happy that the character is being revived.
Based on the responses I’ve seen on virtually every site carrying this news, I would say you are mistaken. Fans of the series would rather it was left alone.
The show lived by its side-characters. If they don’t have a funny sidecast to make it good then this movie will blow. Buffy is better as a tv show, I will give it a chance because I love the Buffyverse but I’m not getting my hopes up. Season 8 wasn’t that bad, it still had the characters being the characters which is what I love about the show. It is just a shame that Anya wasn’t there.
Either way I am happy that Buffy will have a chance to make a new generation of teens and young adults fall in love with the story… lets hope it isn’t terrible.
A Buffy trilogy wouldn’t be such a bad thing though.

Asking a fan base to suddenly shell out money to see unfamiliar actors impersonate their most loved characters….good luck with that. Some clueless studio exec thinks this will get him a piece of that Twilight action, that’s all.

Haven’t we had enough of Buffy already.
buffy without joss is made of fail, they will crash and burn just like queen of the damned did without anne rice.
Certainly everywhere *I’ve* seen thinks that without Whedon at the helm, it will be a disaster worth avoiding. My own opinion, as well. Very best case, it might be a passably decent movie that could’ve been good if it wasn’t Buffy (in the same way that I, Robot could’ve been good if it had been named Hardwired and hadn’t been painted with a superficial coating of Asimov while destroying everything he stood for). But that’s the best case.
I am a big fan of Buffy, i was so upset when they took it off the air due to sarah michelle gellar not wanting to go on with it anymore i believe. i will watch it, if it is a tv series, i will not miss one. if it is a movie i hope it will be made into a tv series. tv has not been the same since it was cancelled same goes for charm about the 3 witches. they should make a comeback also. Glad to hear it is being revived. i would not use Sara michelle gellar, i am sure she is missing the money but i believe she is a momma now and that is the most important thing a woman can go thru.
NNNNNOOOOOOOOO!! just leave it the hell alone!!

“There is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character’s return to the big screen.”
This fan base awaits Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, Michelle Trachtenberg and Joss Whedon.
Sith lets be clear – noone is awaiting Michelle Trachtenberg lol
Really sad that this writer has taken it upon herself to reboot the series without Josh. Who does she think she is!? I can only imagine what dreadful actors are being cast to replace this iconic cast. All I can say is that this Whit, whatever her name is, better make something short of a masterpiece to omage Buffy.
the Star Trek reboot was awesome, but it stayed true to the original cast (Spock) with their explaination and how it happened. The only foreseeable way I can see Whit making this series if she has someone make a wish to Anya for some kind of alternate Buffy Universe.
What the fans truely want, since whoever wrote this article is pretending that Whit and Warner Bros. has the “fans” best interest at heart, is Josh Whedon writing the movie with the original cast. That is what the “fans” want to see, not this abomination.
Haha, this Press Release is hilarious!
Charles Roven must really have some idiots over there: “There is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character’s return to the big screen. We’re thrilled to team up with Doug and Roy on a re-imagining of Buffy and the world she inhabits.”
1/ The first movie is IGNORED by the Buffy fanbase. The idea that they’ve been “eagerly awaiting” a return of THAT Buffy is bizarre. They know it as a TV show, first and foremost. A TV show they love… and one they’d like to see appear for the first time on the big screen.
2/ These fans of the TV are also not eager to see a “re-imagining” of the characters or the world. If the failed 1992 proved anything, it’s that Joss Whedon is what made the formula work. It’s absurd that anyone could try and make anyone believe otherwise.
I truly feel very sorry Atlas Entertainment and Warner Bros. They’re going to put a lot of effort and money into something that nobody actually wants.
