It’s that time of year again, folks. The first Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare trailer has landed online, revealing the next installment in the ever-popular Call of Duty video game franchise, and this time the aim appears to be taking gamers to new heights—literally. This trailer starts out pretty traditionally as far as Call of Duty games go, but then quickly shifts locations to space, where the bulk of the game is set. There are aerial battles, airlock shenanigans, and even off-planet excursions highlighted in this here trailer, but it remains to be seen which facets previewed are actually playable.
The story of the 14th installment in the Call of Duty series takes place in the very distant future, as the nations of Earth have united together to form the “United Nations Space Alliance” with the goal of colonizing new planets. That always goes well, but instead of battling aliens, gamers will have to square off against a hostile faction of humans that call themselves the Settlement Defense Front.
This is certainly new territory for Call of Duty, albeit necessary to keep things fresh as the franchise can only change up the “not-too-distant future combat” concept so much. 2007’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was the first installment not to take place during World War II, and the franchise hasn’t turned back since, forging ahead into near-future territory and then delving into the Cold War with the spinoff franchise Black Ops, which itself has long-since moved past that historical setting.
While a space-set Call of Duty game could be fun, I would be very interested in seeing the franchise return to its historical fiction roots sometime in the near future. It’s been a while, and the most recent installments in the franchise have left much to be desired in terms of campaign storylines.
But at least Infinite Warfare is switching things up. Check out the trailer below. Developed by Infinity Ward, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will be released on November 4th.
