CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 3 Made $1 Billion in 16 Days

by     Posted: December 12th, 2011 at 8:52 am

It’s no secret that people like video games, but boy do we love a good shooter. Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has crossed the $1 billion mark in a mere 16 days. Yes, $1 billion. This beats the previous record set in 2009 by Avatar, which hit the $1 billion mark in 17 days, solidifying MW3 as the game that everybody is playing. For comparison in the gaming world, it took Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 over two months to hit the $1 billion mark.

It’s important to note that MW3 is available on all platforms and each copy costs $60, with the “Hardened” edition retailing for $100, so that’s considerably more than the average movie ticket price (ie. less people bought MW3 than saw Avatar). However, $1 billion is still an incredibly impressive number and signifies the growing nature of the gamer market. Aiding in MW3’s success is the fact that it appeals to a wide range of gamers and features an extensive multiplayer experience that extends the game’s “I’m not bored with this yet”-ness (though I’ve recently fallen down the rabbit hole that is Skyrim). Santa Monica, CA- December 12, 2011 – Activision  Publishing, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), announced today that Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare™ 3 crossed the $1 billion mark in sales since its launch on November 8, 2011, according to Charttrack and retail customer sell-through information. Highlighting the trend of interactive entertainment gaining a greater hold of audiences worldwide, the game achieved this milestone in just 16 days, eclipsing the record set in 2009 by the feature film “Avatar,” which reached the $1 billion milestone in 17 days.

While 2011 box office revenue is on the decline – down 4 percent this year at $9.4 billion, compared with $9.8 billion in 2010 — the number of people purchasing and participating in gaming is on the rise, with no sign of slowing.¹ With more than 30 million gamers, the Call of Duty community now exceeds the combined populations of the cities of New York, London, Tokyo, Paris and Madrid.

¹According to boxofficemojo.com and PricewaterhouseCoopers’Global Entertainment and Media Outlook

“Engagement of our Call of Duty audience continues to rise around the world,” said

Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “Call of Duty® as an entertainment franchise has made an indelible mark on popular culture and its broad and continued success is further validation that audiences are now valuing interactive experiences over passive experiences.

Call of Duty is now amongst that rarified group of sustained franchises like “Star Wars”, “Harry Potter”, “Lord of the Rings” and the National Football League (NFL) that attract or engage tens of millions of people every year or every new release.

Our Call of Duty Elite is one of the fastest growing new online service ever with more than six million players registered since its launch November 8, 2011 and over one million premium subscriptions sold to date.  By comparison, the premium subscription services of Netflix, Hulu Plus, Sirius XM and Xbox® LIVE®, each reached one million paid subscribers after approximately one year.

Call of Duty has become that rare entertainment franchise that transcends its own genre. Core gamers love it, as our stellar reviews show. But every year, new people are drawn into Call of Duty,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. “And while the franchise continues to set records, our fans still seem to want more, demonstrated by our record setting start on Call of Duty Elite. We are committed to helping everyone connect, compete and improve their game, Call of Duty style.”

You also have to take into account that many people saw Avatar multiple times, however you don’t buy a game multiple times. So people saw Avatar, and went back the next weekend to see it again, this is at the very least 10 million people buying this game in the first 16 days, that’s impressive.

Actually, it sold 10.5 million copies on it’s first day…

      Which is, in my opinion…pathetic.

But then again, I hate CoD, think it’s a waste of space and is ruining gaming. Activision can just vomit out the same game every year with a new cover-art and sell 10 million units. They’ve done it time and time again.

What was the last quality Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater? Most people would tell you Tony Hawk 4. Yet, off the top of my head…since then we’ve had Tony Hawk’s Project 8, American Wasteland, Tony Hawk Underground, Underground 2, Downhill Jam, Shred, Ride and a myriad of others, to the tune of nearly yearly releases. And if that wasn’t bad enough, we now have the original being remade as an “HD remake.”

Activision didn’t stop there. They took one of the more unique ideas in recent gaming history and broke it immediately upon touching it. Harmonix and Red Octane created gaming gold with Guitar Hero, followed it with an even better Guitar Hero II and then finished out with Rock the 80′s…after that? Red Octane split from HMX and were bought by Activision. Que up the regurge…since the inception of the series, across all platforms, including PS2, X360, mobile devices, PS3, Wii, PSP and DS…NINETEEN Guitar Hero games have been produced. In less than 10 years…W..T..F..

I’m off on a tangent here, but I’m sorry, someone has to stop this. Or just like the Guitar Hero franchise, just like Tony Hawk, Call of Duty will eventually fall by the wayside due to oversaturation. It’s a yearly event now, but eventually those things wear thin. People realize that they’re being swindled with yearly pallet swaps and money grabs…and they stop buying.

So yay…$1 billion for Call of Duty…I’ll be over here, playing games that don’t feel the need to assault my wallet every 12 months.

Sorry, that should say “cue up the regurge”

I’m ok with them burning out… Treyarch’s been putting out the more interesting games lately (even if they’re not as polished) so if Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare games goes away for a while, we’ll still have the other half of the Call of Duty series coming out every 2 years, which is about the schedule for most major franchises anyway.

Gaming business is on rise but fans are actually loyal fans they gonna pay any price to grab game. But as another game will launch people not going to play it again. It grossed $775m dollars in first five days and took 11 more days to touch $1 billion. Avatar on another note took good but not huge opening in America and worldwide but hold the flow for another three to four months.

Quality game or not gentlemen(Or Ladies) the COD train ain’t slowing down any time soon. It just isn’t. As i said in another site, The series is a titan and has had an unfortunate effect on the market. When the PS4/Xbox 720 come out and the COD rumors start afloat, those sales will more than likely break their last record…
