CAMP X-RAY Trailer: Kristen Stewart Serves as a Guard at Guantanamo Bay

     August 8, 2014

IFC Films has released the first Camp X-Ray trailer for writer/director Peter Sattler’s Guantanamo Bay drama.  The film stars Kristen Stewart as a young private stationed at the aforementioned prison and revolves around the complex relationship that develops between her and a foreign detainee, played by A Separation star Peyman Maadi.  I caught the film at Sundance at found it to be a bit of a mixed bag.  It touches on the controversial issues surrounding the treatment of Guantanamo detainees and does a nice job of portraying them as human beings rather than faceless villains, and in particular the scenes between Stewart and Maadi are quite strong and compelling.  However, other aspects of the film tend to delve into melodrama territory and certain subplots coming off as superfluous and unfocused.  This is Sattler’s first feature and he certainly shows some promise, especially when it comes to intimate character-driven scenes, so I’m definitely eager to see how his career progresses going forward.

Here’s the official synopsis for Camp X-Ray:

A young woman joins the military to be part of something bigger than herself and her small town roots. But she ends up as a new guard at Guantanamo Bay instead, where her mission is far from black and white. Surrounded by hostile jihadists and aggressive squadmates, she strikes up an unusual friendship with one of the detainees. A story of two people, on opposite sides of a war, struggling to find their way through the ethical quagmire of Guantanamo Bay. And in the process, they form an unlikely bond that changes them both.

That headline is comedy gold in itself. LOL!

  • Neo Racer

Is this one of those liberal movies that show terrorists are humans with feelings? lol

    • Shawarma Man

No it shows that maybe we all have been lied to and maybe one of these terrorist is one who was lost in the Echo and ended up at the bay by mistake!!!

    • Shawarma Man

If u think again, this is also somehow the message of the recent Captain America Sequel!!! In almost the mid of the film Nick fury is attacked by the people who looked like police officers and at one point captain America is labelled as a Terrorist himself!!! In the end Steve Rogers aka Captain America stops Shield (people In-Charge) from launching drones (bigger version) in the Air!!!

are comic book movies the only things you watch and think about?

    • YodaRocks

      Yep. It is indeed.

    • John

Well it is important to see both terrorists and soldiers as human beings with feelings, so better to understand them. It’s called empathy, and is an important part of being human.

    • lord jim

well if you think about american interventions in south america, iran, saudi arabia etc., and all the dictators they intsalled to get cheaper oil (and i´m not even talking about the wars in vietnam, afghanistan, iraq) the biggest terrorists are americans.and yes they are humans with feelings ;)

  • Lex Walker

Finally, a role that takes advantage of Kristen Stewart’s ability to look dour and unhappy in any situation.

  • Steven

People can sneer all they want at Stewart’s performance in the Twilight movies (I hated them too), but outside of those movies she has proved to be a very solid actor.

    • star

.not spending my $$ on it

      • lord jim

She was good in Adventureland, On The Road, and Into The Wild.I haven´t seen anything else with her so i really don´t get the hate.

I’ve been to Gitmo for my job (which is for a computer consulting contractor company). Except for there being one flight in and out a week, it was exactly similar to most other non-combat zone bases and it was on a tropical beach, so it was pretty nice. I was surprised that they have families and a lot of civilians on the base. I saw the prison, but didn’t go in so I don’t really know the conditions, but most of the soldiers that I talked to feel like they get a really bad rap in media, and that things really aren’t the way they are portrayed.
So it will be interesting to see how the movie portrays both the guards and the prisoners, because it is easy to forget that they are all human, and is easy to turn them into evil monsters.

    This movie is utter bullshit.

If you want to show empathy or sympathy for these detainees there are other ways to do it, but not one that is such a show of weakness such as this..

Furthermore, I highly doubt they put fresh privates like her in charge of detainees. From what I understand it’s E5 and above, in this case, Sargent and above. Their minds are to fresh and easy to manipulate just like Stewart’s absolutely weak character. She would’ve been reprimanded and rightfully punished for the actions seen in the trailer..
