What would you say to a few casting notices?:

  • Catherine Keener will star opposite Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo in the music drama Can a Song Save Your Life?
  • Dermot Mulroney and Josh Henderson will star in the indie thriller Swelter
  • Kevin Durand joined the ever-growing cast of Devil’s Knot, a true crime drama about the West Memphis 3.

Hit the jump for details on each project.

swelter dermot-mulroneyCan a Song Save Your Life? follows Knightley as a young woman who moves to New York with dreams of singing.  She enters a bad place when her boyfriend (Adam Levine) dumps her: “A down-on-his-luck record producer (Ruffalo) finds her singing in a local bar, and the two realize they may be each other’s last chance to turn their lives around.”  According to THR, Keener will play Ruffalo’s estranged wife, a successful music writer.  Hailee Steinfeld also stars in Song, written/and directed by John Carney (Once).  To add to the eclectic group of talent, Judd Apatow is executive producing.  I am very intrigued.

Per Variety, Swelter centers on “four violent escaped prisoners arriving in a dusty, small California town where the heat is unbearable and everyone knows each other’s business.”  They are looking for a fifth man who fled with $10 million cash.  Keith Parmer is directing from his own script.  Production begins in August.

Devil’s Knot tells the story of the West Memphis 3, a group convicted of killing three boys in Arkansas in 1993 despite the absence of physical evidence (they were released in 2011).  Variety says Durand will play the father of one of the victims; in real life, this father became a person of interest in the case after he changed his story from the initial police statement.  Reese Witherspoon, Colin Firth, Mireille Enos, Collette Wolfe, Kris Polaha, Amy Ryan, Dane DeHaan, Seth Meriwether, James Hamrick, and Kristopher Higgins also star.  Atom Egoyan will direct Devil’s Knot.
