Production is currently underway on Marvel’s Captain America sequel, and though initially it was thought that Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter—who played a major role in the first film—wouldn’t be appearing in The Winter Soldier, we subsequently learned that Atwell will indeed be popping up in the follow-up.  As The Winter Soldier takes place in the present, one assumes that Atwell will likely be relegated to flashback sequences or will be covered in old age makeup.  Either way, it doesn’t sound like Peggy Carter will be a major character in the film.

Atwell recently spoke a bit about Captain America and its sequel, revealing that Marvel has something planned for Comic-Con that will show “what Peggy’s really capable of.”  The actress also addressed the online campaign for her to star in the Tomb Raider reboot.  Hit the jump to see what she had to say.

Speaking with The Age, Atwell revealed that Marvel has taken steps to ensure that Peggy gets her day in the sun:

"There's been an online campaign for Peggy to be featured. People really liked her. So Marvel have made sure that as part of Comic-Con there will be a little kind of snapshot as to what Peggy's actually really capable of, which was finished here and which was great fun. Hopefully, it will lead to other things."

Though it’s a bit unclear as to what this “snapshot” will be, a reasonable assumption is that it could be another Marvel One Shot akin to last year’s short film that focused on new characters dealing with the aftermath of the events of The Avengers.  Again, there’s no confirmation that a Peggy Carter-centric One Shot has been made, but if Marvel is planning something for Comic-Con relating to Peggy that Atwell has already filmed, it makes sense.

The actress also spoke a bit about returning for The Winter Soldier, but she understandably couldn’t reveal much:

"They're so tight, the Marvel family, and private," Atwell told Fairfax. "I can say that I am involved in some way in the second one. Just know that it's not me being cryptic, it's Marvel. They can just as easily kill me off if I threaten to tell the story before it's time. They're keeping it all under wraps."

Atwell said that she wouldn’t be opposed to a Peggy Carter spinoff film, and it sounds like she’s actually quite fond of the idea:

"I'd revisit Peggy again. She's pretty uptight. I'd like to, if I get a spin-off, definitely add a bit of humour in there. She's very British. Very uptight. Let's hope if she gets a spin-off it's modern day, so she can relax a little bit, let go of the uniform."

Finally, with a new Tomb Raider movie in the works at MGM, some fans have already pegged Atwell as the best choice to play Lara Croft.  Atwell is aware of the fan support and sounds pretty game to fill those shoes:

"There's also some kind of online campaign for me to do Tomb Raider Reborn, which I know has just come out as a computer game. MGM have the rights to make it into a film, which would be fantastic to do because I'd get to spend a year of my life training hard and pick up all sorts of fantastic fun skills."

It might be a while before we hear any sort of confirmation regarding just what Marvel has planned for Comic-Con, but we’ll be at the convention in full force in July to bring you a complete rundown of what transpires.  If you missed Steve’s lengthy interview with Captain America: The Winter Soldier screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, click here.  The film opens on April 4, 2014.
