Disney and Marvel Announce Release Date for CAPTAIN AMERICA 2; Will Start Where the THE AVENGERS Leaves Off

     April 5, 2012

Disney and Marvel Studios have scheduled Captain America 2 (tentative title) for April 4, 2014.  As you may recall, the studios had previously scheduled the April 4th date for “Untitled Marvel 1″.  Now that date belongs to Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) post-Avengers adventure.  The movie is still looking for a director, and the current frontrunners are F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job), George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau), and television directors Anthony and Joseph Russo (Community).  It’s worth noting that with a 2014 release date, Captain America 2 probably won’t start shooting until late 2012 at the earliest.

Hit the jump for more including the sequel’s logline and a new image of Captain America in The Avengers. Captain America 2 currently has no competition on April 4, 2012.

chris-evans-captain-america-2-sequel-imageThere are currently no official plot details on Captain America 2, but in an interview with Steve, The First Avengers screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely stressed that it would be hard to do a straight-up period piece now that Steve Rogers has already shown up in his future. However, they said they hoped to season the sequel with a fair amount of flashbacks.  Marvel also provided this logline:

The second installment will pick-up where the highly anticipated Marvel’s The Avengers (May 4, 2012) leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.

The current line up Marvel Studios release dates are as follows:

  • The Avengers on May 4th, 2012
  • Iron Man 3 on May 3rd, 2013
  • Thor 2 on November 15th, 2013
  • Captain America 2 on April 4th 2014
  • Untitled Marvel 2 on May 16th 2014

Captain America 2 is a big blockbuster outside the traditional summer/Thanksgiving zone, so it has room to dominate before the summer season officially begins at the beginning of May.  And speaking of May 2014, raise your hands if you think the May 16, 2014 release date will go to The Avengers 2 (my hand is currently raised).

That’s too fast for Avengers 2. I’m thinking May 2015 at the earliest.

Still, does Marvel Studios have some type of internal clock we don’t know about with how fast they’re pumping out these films?

It’s no wonder everyone of their films feels the same….”good enough”

“And speaking of May 2014, raise your hands if you think the May 16, 2014 release date will go to The Avengers 2 (my hand is currently raised).”

Yep, Avengers 2 being ready for release a month after Cap 2 and half a year after Thor 2 sounds totally realistic. Also, in June 2014 we’ll see Iron Man 4 and in July, Hulk 2. And I think somewhere around Christmas ’14 we’ll get Avengers 3. Probably sooner though.

  • Ash Talon

2015 is a more likely release date for Avengers 2.

I think Marvel will try to launch a new character/franchise in the future. They can’t just keep doing all Avengers characters.

There are a few potentials: Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Guardians of the Galaxy, Namor.

They might want to see what they can do to build to Avengers 2. Maybe just post-credit sequences dropping hints to the villain/story for Avengers 2.

you should put that hand down.you are embarresing yourself

I hope you;re wrong about Avengers 2 in May ’14. Personally i think Hulk needs another installment before Avengers. And if May ’14 doesn’t go to Hulk then here’s hoping it goes to a “Non Avenger” Marvel character or the could finally bring Ant-Man and Wasp into the fray with their own feature…. Here’s to hope!

You know, I had to think about this and it’s astonishing the number of Marvel films in the next three years.

    Iron Man 3, May 2013
    Thor 2, November 2013
    Captain America 2, April 2014.
    Secret Marvel film, May 2014.

That doesn’t include the Marvel films from Fox and Sony.

    Spider-Man 2, 2014
    Wolverine 2, June 2013.

Deadpool, Fantastic Four and Daredevil reboot within the next two to three years.

    Can you say overkill?

Meanwhile, WB/DC has Man of Steel set for June 2013…and? I like WB’s schedule.

    • Eric Nixon

      You forgot the X-men franchise.

And I agree that Marvel may be running the risk over saturation – however – DC/WB have been pathetic with their movie schedule. They could/should have one out (and ONLY one) every year. They should start with Superman, then a (good) Green Lantern sequel, then the Flash, then a JLA movie, then a new Batman (same Nolan continuity, new actor) and then go from there.

      • Cory

WB has been doing almost one movie per year since ’04.

        Catwoman 2004
        Constantine and Batman Begins 2005
Superman Returns and V for Vendetta 2006
        The Dark Knight 2008
        Watchmen 2009
        Losers and Jonah Hex 2010
        Green Lantern 2011
        The Dark Knight Rises 2012
        Man of Steel 2013

Like Marvel, WB has had some good films and bad films but it’s not like WB/DC has been totally silent. It’s just with the glutton of Marvel films, it seems like they haven’t done much….

All WB/DC needs to do is announce something for Summer 2014 and all is well.

Marvel has been doing a lot better than Warners at building their shared superhero universe franchise. But everything’s been building up to the Avengers movie from the very start. Where do they go after they’ve blown up the world and saved it?

I think bringing in other characters would be a great idea, but who are the really strong characters Marvel could bring in? Ideally, they should bring in Spidey and the X-men. It would be incredible to bring mutants into the mix they’ve already created. But sadly these other studios won’t let that happen.

  • AlexHeyNa

I’m actually thinking Untitled Marvel 2 is probably The Incredible Hulk 2.

  • Sean

Cap’s my favorite, and I’m excited Marvel will continue his story on the big screen! However, April 4 seems a little early in the year for a big Marvel movie. I guess spring is now officially a part of the blockbuster movie season.

  • curbcooler

I think 4th of July Weekend 2015 would be perfect for The Avengers 2.

I also did here the editor of Marvel Comics say they would finally like to move forward with there Black Panther movie but don’t wanna go forward without Idris Elba.

But the Marvel title like “Black Panther” alone will make the brass at Fox News go off.

  • Chris

PLEASE be the Russo brothers. That would be incredible.

Also, where’s Ant Man? I was hoping to see that in 2014. : (

Its not Avengers 2 , put your hand down.

Here are my best guesses for that date … and I have it narrowed down to 4 in order of most to least likely in my opinion

    1. The SHIELD movie they have been rumbling about Nick Furry/Coulston and Id say Hawkeye and Black Widow as I dont think either of them can have there own movie based on what I have seen. I may be wrong here but I would keep them as a SHIELD unit.

    2. Ant-Man . it has been slowly gaining back some momentum and could serve as a way to introduce a new Avenger to add to the mix or perhaps replace a member whos cycle is complete and may be getting to expensive to keep on, say Iron Man and RDJ

    3. Hulk Reboot – Yes another one but a more in tune version with the Avenger world. This also depends on what Ruffalos deal is with Marvel, like how many movies though as we have seen changing Bruce Banner has never been hard.

    4. None Avengers related , Guardians of the Galaxy or perhaps The Inhumans

I think Marvel would rather The Avengers be its only release ( within those core characters) of any given year so 2015 seems more realistic . But if The Avengers makes a Billion Dollars which it very well could worldwide then maybe they throw the Avengers cycle out the window. Though you would have to think they have this cycle already laid out to get Trilogies out of Cap, Thor and The Avengers and Maybe a 4th Iron Man depending on RDJs deal.

Anyway you cut this we are going to see Avengers movie and Avenger Member movies until at least 2020.

Marvel’s just have some superb star cast in each of their movies. Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow were a delight in the grandest sense of the word. The Avengers was nothing short of excellence. And trust me I am so so looking forward to Captain America: The Winter Soldier! The trailer has come out and here I am counting days to the 3rd of April!
