Thor: The Dark World hasn’t even hit theaters yet, but now it’s time to move on to the next Marvel movie!  The studio has released a new poster for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  In the upcoming sequel, Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) team up to face off against Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), who has been survived and become an assassin known as “The Winter Soldier”.  Like the teaser poster, this new one plays up the iconography of the shield, but it also adds a nice touch with Cap standing on the S.H.I.E.L.D. emblem.  For those who don’t know, the major thematic conflict will be Steve Rogers’ sense of right-and-wrong running up against the moral grey area inhabited by S.H.I.E.L.D.

Hit the jump to check out the poster, and come back on Thursday to check out the teaser trailer.  The film also stars Cobie Smulders, Georges St-Pierre, Frank Grillo, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp, Maximiliano Hernández, Robert Redford, and Samuel L. JacksonCaptain America: The Winter Soldier opens April 4, 2014.

Here’s the synopsis for Captain America: The Winter Soldier:

After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy—the Winter Soldier.

I’m really liking everything I’ve seen about this movie so far. It looks like it’s not only going to be bigger than the first, but more exciting. I’m optimistic on their ability to navigate to a new genre. Also, Cap is the perfect feature to seamlessly develop SHIELD and that side of the Marvel Universe.

are you basing your excitement on those (definitely) biased reports of how great it will be from people within the Marvel studio, and those like three set photos of people walking from their trailers?

i’d love to see more if I’ve missed it, but that’s all i know about from this film…

I like what they’ve said about the direction they want to take Cap. I was skeptical before they came out with the first one, but I thought they really pulled it off with the WWII theme. I was wondering what they would do with him 60 years later, but I think this whole theme of Cap working with SHIELD in a politically charged movie really works. This is of course without seeing any footage. I just like the idea and the poster.

This is a really nice way to develop SHIELD without a standalone pic, because it’s organic. Cap needs SHIELD both in the movie and out of the movie. This is in contrast to IM2, where SHIELD was clearly piggybacking on IM.

“[...]face off against Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), who has been survived and become an assassin[...]”

    “has been survived”?
    seriously. what. the. fuh.

Cap’s my favorite supehero and I feel after the first solo and Avengers film there is still way more they can do with him. The feel I’m getting for this film is really suggesting that they finally will really get Cap right here, like more then they ever got him before. I also can’t wait to see more of Widow, and the introduction of Falcon.

So except for movie nerds and comic geeks is anyone supposed to know Bucky is the winter soldier like some sort of twist? or is that going to be in the trailer?

    • JBug

      Probably explicit.

Of all the Marvel films this is the one that I’m the most excited for. Thought Thor was entertaining but thought it felt more like Lord of the Rings than a superhero flick. Still a good film as opposed to something like Green Lantern, but doesn’t quite fit into the “superhero mold”. Also, not that I want to see this happen but I feel that Thor: The Dark World will not make as much as Marvel is anticipating. I say this only because I don’t think a lot of people are as excited for this as they were with the 1st film came out as it was a building block to the Avengers. Now that the Avengers is past us I just don’t see the same for the sequel. Captain America on the other hand has a chance to do better because it has a more grounded setting and will connect with people outside of teenagers and fanboys.

    • JBug

I think the opposite. First Thor fit superhero mold pretty well, but the new one seems like LOTR. If anything, Avengers will make more people go out and see Thor because people who were previously unfamiliar with the character now know him and might be interested in seeing him in a solo feature. There were not as many Thor fans before the first Thor came out as there are now. Historically, sequels make more money than their successful originals because they have built fan base who enjoyed the first one.

This has the potential to be the best (individual) comic book character film since The Dark Knight. So excited.

    • Clay

I think you should couch your expectations just a smidgeon.

      • Kevin

Being better than The Dark Knight would not be too difficult.

      • Kevin

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great movie. But it’s not even the best Batman film.

      • Bob

Its really is. It’s actually the best CBM by far, and that’s pretty much a universal consensus. Don’t act like you don’t know it is.

      • Kevin

Batman is much better. Better Batman, better Joker, better story.

      • Clay

I could argue this over the next 5 paragraphs like I’ve done so many times before, but really, if we’re this far off in our appraisal of TDK then I don’t see the point. Agree to disagree. These things are all personal taste.

And Cap 2 not having to accomplish very much to be better than TDK, well, yeah, I think we’ve again come to an impasse.

Do you think we will see a trailer with Thor?

    • The Flobbit

      No.

    • Kevin

      Yes.

    • Bob

      Yes, we will.

    Captain America: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

    • ʝoe Cûddleš ßloggs

That’s what the stupid TV show needs actually to be any good.

  • tato

I dont like the helmet, seems that for studios is impossible the achieve a good costume when it comes to superheroes

    • Bob

IMO, Thor’s costume has been absolutely perfect in Thor and Avengers(when sleeves were on)

  • The Flobbit

I am looking forward to this movie miles above Thor 2. The cast is excellent, and these guys (Like Thor 2′s Alan Taylor) really know what they’re doing. Begrudgingly, I have to say that the folks over at Marvel are organized geniuses, and the folks at DC are squabbling, messy, juvenile geniuses with the best source material in the world.

DC needs a Kevin Feige to get them in line.

  • Adrian

Man I thought the first one was average. And with bucky coming back things are not looking up

Also, both of Cap’s posters have been some of the best posters Marvel studios has ever made.
