Just over a week ago, we learned that Frank Grillo (The Grey, Warrior) had tested for a villain role in Marvel’s sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  I was pretty onboard with the idea of Grillo tackling the brawny marksman role of Crossbones, but we had also heard a few more recognizable names mentioned for the part so it was unclear if Grillo would walk away the victor.  However, it appears that he made quite the impression with the Marvel folks, as confirmation has now come down that Grillo is set to portray the baddie Crossbones in the Captain America sequel.  Hit the jump for more.

frank-grillo-captain-america-the-winter-soldierThe news of Grillo’s confirmation comes via Variety, who reports that the actor has closed a deal for the role.  The character of Crossbones began as the leader of the Savage Crims gang in the comics, before later joining a school for criminals and becoming a henchman for Red Skull.  The antagonist is a proficient marksman who is well versed in hand-to-hand combat, and I can’t wait to see what Grillo does with the character.

The female lead has yet to be set, but we should hear some word on that soon as we’ve recently reported on a number of actresses that have been vying for the role.  Chris Evans returns in the Captain America sequel alongside Anthony Mackie as The Falcon and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/the titular assassin Winter Soldier.  Also appearing in the film will be S.H.I.E.L.D. members Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, and Scarlett Johansson, with television directors Anthony and Joe Russo taking the helm when production begins in March.  Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens in 3D on April 4th, 2014.

Crossbones isn’t the one who killed Captain America? Winter soldier becomes Captain America?

Crossbones is arrested as Cap’s killer. He shot him with a sniper rifle, but Cap was “killed” with a special gun in the confusion by his girlfriend Sharon Carter, who was under mind control. Winter Soldier becomes Captain America after Cap leaves Tony Stark a letter saying that he wants Bucky to take over the mantle in order to give him the chance to redeem himself for what he did as the Winter Soldier. Read all of Ed Brubakers run of comics if you are interested. His comics are among the best I have ever read.

Just because that’s what’s in the comics doesn’t make it so in the movies. Why does Captain America have to go up against so many villains? That’s what ruined the early Batman movies. What? Bad guys so weak they have gang up on the good guy? I was excited, now not so much.

I like that you’ve already decided to not like (as much) the supposed plot of a movie that hasn’t been made yet. We don’t know how they’ll tie Crossbone into the Winter Soldier story, yet, so why assume shit when all you have is vapor?

Multiple villains does not a bad movie make. Forgetting that the hero exists DOES. That’s what killed the later Batman & Spider-Man movies. When you start focusing on the villain’s arcs and character development more than the protagonist’s then you’re doing something wrong. As long as the CA2 writing & directing team keep their eyes on the prize then they should be just fine.

As far as Crossbones and the dead Cap connection goes… Cap was around for a very long time before Crossbones capped him. There’s absolutely no need to go there just yet. Also, just because Crossbones is there, I don’t see any need for him to be anything larger than a muscled lackey. He never was A+ bad guy material anyway.

Well said Rob. While I’m iffy on the directors chosen, I’m confident that Marvel Studios will allow Captain America to be the star of his movie. If they can be credited for anything, it’s keeping their heroes at the front of the story. Ever since Iron Man, people have walked out of the theatre talking about how awesome the heroes are. If anyone gets the short end of the stick in the Marvel universe, it’s the villains.

    Grillo is a handsome dude.

Crossbones at his most memorable was tied to Red Skull. With the film Red Skull of appearing in the film (unless they hadn’t discussed it with Weaving at the time of his infamous interview), I think Crossbones will be some kind of Red Skull worshipper. Maybe Hydra has come back. Or has ties to the Winter Soldier. There’s supposedly anotherale villain as well who is probably the string-pulling, major, bad guy who Crossbones works for. It’ll be interesting to see if Winter Soldier was working for the Soviet Union, Hydra, or a Soviet-based Hydra faction.
