If Phase 2 of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe was about sequels that furthered the stories of individual characters and introducing Guardians of the Galaxy to audiences, it looks like Phase 3 will redefine what a sequel can be. Things will kick off in a big way with Captain America 3, which isn’t just the continuing adventures of Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers. Officially titled Captain America: Civil War, the film will see Robert Downey Jr. co-starring as Tony Stark and, as the title suggests, squaring off against Rogers. But that’s not all! The superhero sequel will also introduce a new Marvel superhero in the form of Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther.
Evan recently caught up with Captain America: The Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackie during the press day for the upcoming drama Black or White, and the actor teased big things for Civil War, which he calls “The Avengers 3.8”.
During a 1:1 interview with Mackie about Black or White, in which he plays an attorney fighting for custody of a child on Octavia Spencer’s behalf, Mackie teased Captain America: Civil War as much as he can without becoming in danger of the spoiler ninjas at Marvel:
“Let’s just say it’s a wing-ding-doozy of a time. The great thing about it is, after seeing The Avengers I joked and said Captain America 2 was Avengers 1.5. Now with Avengers 2 coming out… Captain America 3 is so far beyond Avengers 2.5 and onto the realm of Avengers 3.8. It’s by far one of the most stupendous rides Marvel has put together.”
Brothers Joe and Anthony Russo, who directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and are in line to take over as the directors of the two-part Avengers: Infinity War saga, are returning to helm Captain America 3, and all signs point to it being a very, very big movie.
Production will begin later this year in anticipation of a May 6, 2016 release date. Look for Evan’s full interview with Mackie on Collider soon.
