Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely Talk CAPTAIN AMERICA 3; Reveal They’ve Been Working on it Since Late 2013

With Captain America: The Winter Solider the number one movie around the world, it’s finally time to share some of the filmmaker interviews that get into the spoilers of the film.  However, before jumping into what screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely said about the making of  Winter Soldier, I wanted to post what they had to say about Captain America 3.

As we reported a few weeks ago, Winter Solider directors Joe and Anthony Russo are returning to helm Captain America 3 and they’ve already got a release date: May 6, 2016.  At the recent junket they told me, “We’re just in the formative stages of it right now.  We just started breaking story with screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and we’re just getting an idea of what we wanna do with it.”  They added it’s hard to work on the story “before the movie even comes out because you want to see what people respond to.”  Hit the jump for more.

Before going any further, if you haven’t seen Captain America: The Winter Solider, stop reading this article.  Spoilers are about to be discussed.

captain-america-3-stephen-mcfeely-christopher-markusDuring my interview with Markus and McFeely they revealed:

  • They’ve been working on Captain America 3 since late last year.
  • They say they’ve in the early days of writing the script, which means they’re throwing out ideas to see what’s working.
  • They’ve read Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron script, and are very happy with the way Captain America is handled and where he is when the film ends.
  • They’re trying to make sure the other characters in Captain America 3 don’t overshadow Captain America since he needs to be the star of the film.
  • They’re still not sure how big of a role Winter Soldier will have in the 3rd film.

Like everyone I’ve spoken to, I loved the introduction of the Winter Solider and think Sebastian Stan was a great addition to the cast.  It’s going to be interesting to see how they work him in, how long before he’s fighting alongside Cap and then getting his own movie.

Here’s Markus and McFeely on Captain America 3.  Look for more with them soon.

  • 0:20 – Being invited to write Captain America 3
  • 1:24 – How far they are in the writing process on Captain America 3
  • 2:38 – Trying to work their script with the story for Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • 3:48 – Figuring out the future for Bucky/Winter Soldier

Saw it with my 6 year old boy…he went in going “Dad you know Iron Man is my favorite avenger” to “Captain america kicks serious butt!”

    • The Flobbit

It’s really your prerogative, but really, a 6 year old boy? In the film where Captain America throws a knife into a man’s hand, and breaks a man’s back with a kick, and a nanny is shot twice in the chest…?

      • JBug

This isn’t the place for that kind of judgement.

      • spongefist

yes it is… and a quality bit of judging it was too

      • JorEl96

What he meant is this comment thread is about the third cap film and information about that. He was merely suggesting that comments return to the subject at hand and don’t go further into places where people are going to have disagreements. Now that is a ‘quality bit of thinking’. Furthermore your who are you to say it isn’t comment could be construed as rather rude. If you are going to say I don’t like to say this then why say it at all? If you know what you are about to say makes you uncomfortable to say because it may cause problems then why say anything? He may not be a moderator and neither am I, but I agree wholeheartedly that this is not the place to discuss whether it is right for a parent to take a child to the winter soldier film. Such discussion belongs on the BBFC’s Inquiries page. On topic I am glad that Joe and Anthony Russo are returning for Cap 3 as the winter soldier was one of the best cap films to date and the action sequences were some of the best I’ve seen in a superhero action film.

      • The Flobbit

I don’t like to say this but, who are you to say it isn’t?

      • JBug

I’m assuming you’re not being facetious, I’m just saying that people come here to talk about movies. You always have valuable input in that category. When it comes to parenting advice, it gets a lot more personal. I imagine you are just trying to better the world with your advice, but I don’t believe it is going to have any positive impact in this setting and it could cause conflict, which would be borderline trolling (which I’m not accusing you of). Either way, it doesn’t matter. We’re just talking for fun.

Duly noted. But he was introudced to the Marvel universe when he was 3. He sat with me at iron man 2 and 3 and also Thor 1. He gets into it.

I think it’s great that this is something that you and your son enjoy together.

      • Daniel Ronczkowski

He watches Teen Titans on cartoon network and he knows I am a Marvel person and he is like “Dad I think I will start reading DC comics” Just to mess with me, he is a funny dude.

      • LockIce

        Please…

      • LockIce

So what. It’s a superhero movie. You expect him to ride ponies? Ass whopping is inevitable.

      • Leo Spaceman

I’m just glad he didn’t bring a baby to the movie. I remember went I went to see the Avengers, there was a baby crying in a very packed Big Screen theater. And somebody finally snapped about an hour and a half into the movie and yelled across the room that if your baby can’t shut the F**k up bring it the F**k outside.

I have no problems with what a father chooses to let his child watch, so long as its not porn or torture porn, so long as the child can keep its damn mouth shut which I know not all 6 year olds can do. The only people I judge are the people who ruin the movie experience for the other 200 people in the theater.

      • ozzie96

I brought my 7 year old…….so what? I saw worse growing up in the streetsof chicago!

      • spongefist

I didn’t think the ‘Never Ending Story’ was screened in the ‘Streets of Chigago’? but you do sound very tough…so I will hide behind my keyboard…

      • ozzie96

        what?

      • Daniel Ronczkowski

Where in Chicago are ya from? Burbs or the city

      • Werefon

I watched RoboCop when I was 3. Year later, Evil Dead 1-2, Terminator 1-2.
I mean, I am a maniac-psycho but nothing is wrong with that!

      • RecoveR

That’s why there is a pg-13 or a 12a etc, so kids under those age ranges can be taken with their parents. As a parent- the man has a right to decide what his children watches.

      • MD

Ha, I was watching horror films at the age of 5 and you’re worried about a 6 year old watching a superhero film?

      • The Flobbit

        Does one wrong justify another?

      • The Flobbit

        Does one wrong justify another?

      • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

If you saw films like Indiana Jones at that age then what’s the difference? Both type of films have same type of action and mayhem (nazi melting face scene). Either way it’s the parent’s decision to make what they deem is ok for their child to watch.

      • ellid

Whose back is broken? I’ve seen that film four times and I don’t recall that. Also, Renata was a housekeeper, not a nanny.

I do agree that six year olds are too young for this film.

      • The Flobbit

In the ship scene, he kicks a man backwards, who flies into the railing, snapping his back.

Bring back Crossbones (with the mask this time).
    Bring in Baron Zemo.
Bring in Sin (the Red Skull’s daughter)-played by Ruth Wilson.

  • Merlin235

There are so many places they can take Cap 3. I was really happy with the twist and turns in Cap 2. SPOILER ALERT!!! Armin Zola, are you kidding me? Hydra behind it all!?!? They could have ignored Hydra as being defeated in The First Avenger. Awesome! So happy with that movie.

EVERY movie theatre seems to have babies in it these days – there was one in the audience last Saturday night when we saw TWS and we saw some little boys too. I’m sorry, it’s way too intense for little kids. I know the little ones want to see it, but parents should show some restraint – and those with babies should get babysitters!

If it was up to me, I’d title it Captain America: Rise of Hydra and make it a story of how the WS searches for the source of Hydra to exact revenge. CA sets out to locate WS, finally joining him and together they kick some serious Hydra butt – but not before another epic showdown to each other!

Through the journey, we are treated to quality flashbacks of the Howling Commandos and their missions as Bucky retreads familiar ground. Arnim Zola, in his new robot capacitive state makes an appearance. The denouement being Red Skull revealed as the mastermind working in tandem with Baron Zemo – who does the ultimate double-cross on Skull. Alternatively if Red Skull is no longer an option, the two heads can be Von Strucker and Baron Zemo. If possible, I’d also feature a revitalised Madame Hydra.

The story evolving around this can be immense and engaging.

Definitely bring in Zemo! Who would play him though?

      • ʝoe ßloggs

I think an unknown would be the best casting. But if going for a famous name, perhaps either Christoph Waltz (best!!) or Gerard Butler (as a physical match for the Captain).

      • JorEl96

Fantastic ideas! Both actors could pull the character off very well indeed. I’ve wanted to see zemo clash with cap since day 1. there is just something rather symbolic when they fight as zemo fights with a sword and cap with a shield almost like they are both reflections of each other. A flashback to WW2 to explain zemo’s hatred with cap would be required as if I remember the avengers earth’s mightiest heroes animated series cap terminally injures him using some chemical. Which zemo uses Zola to try and cure.

I’d really like for their to be a Winter Soldier movie before or after Cap 3. I think in Cap 3 depending on what happens in avengers 2, they should focus on him figuring a way to bring down Hydra in some plot that has to do with Red Skull or one of the other Hydra bigwigs. But also having Cap search for Bucky and trying to convince him to fight with him, have Bucky agree to help him, only for Bucky at the end to take off on his own because he still wants revenge on someone (scientists or something).

And then in a Winter Soldier or Black Widow or maybe combine the two, into a superhero/spy movie the two deal with it. Natasha could hunt down Bucky and show him info she got on the ones who caused his problems and the two pair up and hunt and fight down whoever and at the end Bucky gets a ride from Natasha to wherever Steve is, hinting at the two joining together for avengers 3 or Cap 4. Basically it’d be like the Winter Soldier comic series.

Whatever they do, i just hope it’s good and enjoyable and better than Iron Man 3.
